The On-the-Land Programs Coordinator will lead TNC Canada’s work to strengthen Indigenous youth leadership and stewardship programming across Canada.  The Coordinator will provide strategic oversight and direction to guide TNC Canada’s work as it focuses on expanding from existing SEAS (Supporting Emerging Aboriginal Stewards – www.emergingstewards.org  programs in BC to new youth on-the-land programs in other communities in British Columbia, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories.  The coordinator will work with TNC Canada program leads in these geographies, as well as community leaders, to facilitate the development of on-the-land youth programming that aligns with community needs and TNC Canada’s theory of change. This work fits within TNC Canada’s Indigenous Stewardship Strategy which aims to strengthen Indigenous leadership, stewardship capacity, and governance for resource management and sustainable economic development.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The On-the-Land Programs Coordinator will support TNC Canada’s work with Indigenous peoples across Canada.  By working with regional program leads and local communities they will design and implement approaches for supporting hands-on experiential learning that strengthens the connections between young people, the lands and waters they are from, and the community and culture they are part of.   This will involve working with communities where TNC Canada currently supports youth programming to ensure the resilience and sustainability of these programs and working with communities in B.C., Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories to pilot new programs that reflect local values and priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Liaise with TNC Canada program leads and community partners to identify opportunities for Indigenous on-the-land youth programming;
  • Support activities related to the growth and resilience of youth leadership and stewardship programming across Canada;
  • Refine/ adapt TNC Canada’s strategy and approach to supporting Indigenous youth programming;
  • Pilot and refine program planning and evaluation tools with community leads;
  • Lead program administration and reporting (e.g. developing and managing funding agreements and collecting data on program impact);
  • Maintain relationships with community partners, as determined in partnership with the program leads;
  • Provide support, as needed, to community program coordinators to design, plan, deliver and monitor programs;
  • Ensure regular program updates to facilitate shared learning between communities, TNC Canada, and partner organizations through in person meetings (e.g. community exchanges), online and other platforms;
  • Assist TNC Canada’s fundraising team by developing and reviewing materials and proposals;
  • Under minimal supervision, make independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context; and
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3 years of experience in Indigenous stewardship/natural resource management, conservation, youth leadership and education, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal);
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and web browsers; and
  • Must be able to pass a background screen to qualify for working with youth.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multicultural or cross cultural experience;
  • Experience working in and with remote Indigenous communities;
  • Willingness and enthusiasm for travel to partner communities;
  • Excellent communications via written and spoken means in English and other relevant languages;
  • Skills developing and driving both strategic direction and implementation (i.e. project/program management); and
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks independently and within timelines.
