Director of Aquatics

This position is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, management, staffing and evaluation of all aquatic programs and facility scheduling assuring high quality activities and safety of participants. This position is also responsible for assisting with branch Healthy Living initiatives.   The work of this position will have a direct effect in achieving the YMCA mission and the branch strategic goals of instilling positive values in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Empathetically listen and communicate for understanding.  Build relationships to create small communities.  Provide staff with feedback, coaching, guidance and support.  Build and nurture strategic collaborations within the community.
  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives (see detailed list below).
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, may organize and schedule program registrations. May review and process program scholarship applications.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Assists with Program Committee meetings
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Maintains accurate records of staff certifications.
  • Works with the Facility Director to ensure proper maintenance of pool and Jacuzzi.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Is directly responsible for the operational effectiveness of the aquatics coordinator.
  • Works with the aquatics coordinator to effectively manage the daily pool usage schedule.
  • Works with aquatics coordinator to ensure Lifeguards, swim classes, water fitness classes, swim team practices and meets are scheduled and staffed appropriately.
  • Ensure that an adult lifeguard is present in the pool area whenever a minor is working.
  • Prepare class registration guide for each aquatics program at least one week prior to the start of each session 
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • One to two years related experience preferred.
  • Minimum age requirements may apply; for example, minimum age of 21. 
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications. Certifications in YMCA Aquatic Management (YAM), POOL, YMCA Training Others, YMCA On The Guard & Trainer (which also includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED & Oxygen), YMCA Swim Instructor
  • Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and results will be submitted to the Association Human Resources Department. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential duties of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. 
  • Requires light physical activity such as phone and computer work.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $21.63 - $25.00
