The Missouri Ozarks Burn Crew Member participates in wildland fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. The Burn Crew Member may assist on wildland fire operations in other parts of the region with federal, state, or private partners, or travel to other areas of the state or out-of-state to assist other TNC programs or partners on prescribed or wildland fires.  Housing is provided to fire crew members.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Burn Crew Member travels extensively as part of a six person fire crew responsible for preparation and implementation of prescribed fire at sites throughout Missouri in woodland and grassland fuels.  Burn Crew Members will assist with fireline construction, burn unit preparation, and participate in wildland fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc.  Experience on fires may afford Task Book sign-off for some fireline positions.  The Prescribed Burn Crew is required to live in fire management facilities in Van Buren and be available for work on short notice when business requires.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Performs other preserve management or maintenance duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
  • Works in a high stress team environment.
  • Works under close supervision.
  • Performs heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Travels throughout Missouri and adjacent states sometimes on short notice for up to ten days at a time.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.    
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.  See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm      
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Ability to pass pack test at “arduous level” (carry a 45-¬pound pack over 3 miles of level terrain in 45 minutes or less)         
  •  Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver’s license).
