Directs all aspects of the Early Childhood and Child Watch services at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. Maintains all records for the state, federal and local agencies. Assists teachers with curriculum development and classroom management. Possess excellent leadership and management skills to adequately communicate with staff and families, plus knowledge of sound child development practices.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages, directs and coordinates the Early Childhood Education and Child Watch on-site and off-site programming. Ensures high-quality curriculum and establishes new program activities. Expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations as they relate to program areas. Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with state childcare licensing agency, school administration, parent groups and other organizations and agencies related to assigned programs. Responds to all agency, parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program and/or membership growth for the YMCA, executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA, including but not limited to organizing special events for parents and program participants.
  • Stays current with development trends in the community and surrounding areas.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises staff and volunteers in assigned areas and conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Facilitates communication and provides leadership.
  • Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Provides assistance in classrooms, both during staff shortages and resolution of difficult or unique parent/child situations.
  • Regularly schedules classroom/site visits for observation purposes.
  • Manages, directs and coordinates Child Watch. Ensures high-quality service is provided for members, with Member Experience focus expectations required of all staff.
  • Develops continuing education schedule which includes options relevant to the specific service area (i.e. preschool, grade school, Child Watch) to include online courses through ILEAD, on-site seminars and team-building exercises.
  • Acts as Food Program Administrator: maintains certification. keeps current on changes to food program, develops relationship with outside food vendor, serves as backup for food service, ordering of meals and submission for State reimbursement.
  • Develops, manages and controls budgets related to the position. Ensures program operates within budget and that program fees are collected.
  • Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures that physical environment supports healthy living.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Maintains proper records/department files, and develops statistical information reports that aid in analyzing results., assures facilities and programs meet state requirements.
  • Follows emergency procedures and safety precautions. Follow procedures for reporting all accidents, incidents and hazards.
  • Adheres to all policies, rules, and regulations as outlined in employee handbook and other communications. Obtain and maintain required training(s).
  • Accepts additional assignments as deemed appropriate, within the scope of the job description.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education with a Kindergarten Endorsement and grades of C or better.
Skills/Experience: 
  • One of the following education and experience qualifications required: (Must include 15 credit hours in college-level courses with documented content relating to the needs, skills, development, or teaching methods of children 6 years of age or younger with grades of C or better) or, alternatively, Associate’s Degree in Early childhood Education with a grade of C or better and a minimum of three-years’ experience in an early childhood program.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience progressive responsibilities in child care operations, program development and financial management including staff supervision, volunteer recruitment required.
  • Completion of YMCA Child Care program specific certifications for ages 0-12preferred.
  • Minimum age of 21years required.
  • Valid Indiana issued For Hire license or secured within 60 days ofhire required.
  • Multi-Team Leader certification required or is in process of obtaining.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Intermediate user of Microsoft Office programs required.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $42,000.00 - $47,000.00
