Regional Director, Government Affairs - Central Region

The individual serving in this position oversees the advancement of LLS's state government affairs agenda in OPP’s Central Region in an effort to reduce barriers to care for blood cancer patients. This agenda includes, among other things, reductions in the cost burden that patients encounter when accessing cancer care and implementation and enforcement of patient protections established by the Affordable Care Act. To conduct this work, the Regional Director partners closely with other field-based OPP colleagues, primarily members of OPP’s advocacy team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee the advancement of LLS’s policy agenda in the region, through engagement with legislators, regulatory bodies, governors’ administrations, and other state policy-makers
  • Develop state-specific government affairs strategies and work closely with colleagues on OPP’s advocacy team to implement and refine as needed
  • Develop key alliances with government affairs contacts at patient organizations, provider associations, and other allies, as appropriate throughout the region
  • Represent LLS government affairs in interactions with relevant industries in the region, including the pharmaceutical and insurance industries
  • Work closely with OPP’s advocacy team to help drive volunteer and staff engagement on policy priorities at both the state and federal levels, serving in particular as a source of policy expertise
  • Cultivate relationships with LLS’s chapter-based staff, with a particular focus on working in partnership with chapter executive directors
  • Monitor policy trends and other movements in the region relevant to LLS’s mission, recommending actions as appropriate
  • Maintain a strong understanding of LLS’s patient access programs and revenue-generating campaigns, to help promote the organization and its initiatives as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field, e.g. health care, public policy, or government
Skills/Experience: 

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in state level public or private sector lobbying or government affairs
  • Health care policy or lobbying experience strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to access and influence policy decision-makers
  • Experience working across multiple functions within an organization to achieve goals with enterprise-level impact

Position Requirements:

  • Solid knowledge of healthcare policy issues and policy-making processes
  • An understanding of state and federal government processes and their inter-connections
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently in a home office, thrive under pressure, and simultaneously advance multiple high-level tasks
  • Ability to travel extensively and work flexible hours

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Approximately 35% travel, with significant time spent in key state capitols and at least semi-annual visits to the LLS Office of Public Policy in Washington, D.C.
