Managing Director, Data Governance & Strategy

As the Managing Director, Data Governance & Strategy, you will lead a team of two to take on high-stakes and high-visibility cross-functional projects and workstreams critical to driving progress towards One Day. You will align the organization (including its most senior leaders) around a clear set of top-line outcomes, measures, and indicators; by doing so, you will ensure attention is focused on the biggest breakthroughs necessary to achieve our vision. You will also convene and lead a group of national and regional stakeholders to build and maintain a strong data governance function that ensures accuracy, consistency, reproducibility, and appropriate confidentiality for the data we share internally and externally.

For example, you will shepherd this group to align on and maintain definitions across teams and systems and to establish protocols for sharing data, restating data, reproducing past data, etc. This position is a unique opportunity for an individual with advanced strategic thinking and analytical skills, exceptional verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated success at building relationships, influencing, and collaborating with colleagues at all levels, and strong project management experience.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of exercising strong judgment and operating independently in complex situations and will enjoy achieving outcomes by working through and with others.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide mentorship, guidance and career development to a team of two — work with direct reports on strategies for executing, measuring progress and sharing results
  • Set the vision for data governance efforts, and convene and lead a group of national and regional stakeholders to:
    • Secure organizational alignment around a clear set of top-line outcomes, measures, indicators, and descriptive data, engaging the CEO and other senior leaders
    • Define and document the shared foundational outcomes, measures, indicators, and descriptive data that must be maintained centrally in order to provide a strong shared foundation for Teach For America
    • Ensure stakeholders at all levels can access this information accurately, consistently, and reproducibly
    • Facilitate the use of a standard process to ensure that decisions concerning shared data are made in a transparent and appropriately inclusive manner
    • Monitor compliance with agreed-upon data standards (e.g., through creation of a set of data quality measures)
    • Shape data confidentiality policies and practices
  • Lead and execute other cross-functional data, reporting and insights projects as determined
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6-8 years of experience, with at least 1 year of direct experience in an area of data governance listed above
  • Distinctive impact/progression of increasing responsibility in previous work
  • Teach For America experience (staff or corps) preferred 
  • Ability to set vision and direction in dynamic environment, leveraging input from multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated success driving cross-functional change by managing laterally, working collaboratively and influencing others to achieve outcomes in dynamic and complex organizational environments
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to synthesize findings and construct a narrative for a variety of audiences
  • Ability to envision, plan and project-manage multiple complex, collaborative projects simultaneously, with impeccable follow-through on execution
  • Ability to build and maintain strong trusting relationships
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, critical consciousness, and ability to work across lines of difference
  • Deep critical thinking and problem-solving skills, driven by clear, rigorous logic

Work Demands

  • Ability to travel to in-person meetings in various U.S. cities 2-3 times/quarter
  • Occasional weekend or evening work is required
