NRDC seeks a Litigation Operations Manager with at least five years of relevant experience to oversee litigation operations and practice group management for a thirty-two person Litigation Team. The position will be based in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, or Washington, DC.
Work Closely with NRDC’s Litigation Directors to Facilitate Team Management
- Prepare regular litigation updates for NRDC leadership and departments;
- Develop biweekly Team meeting agendas and drive follow-up after meetings;
- Help develop affirmative litigation communications strategies;
- Collaborate with NRDC Litigation Directors in budgeting and fundraising;
- Oversee budget and expense tracking and reporting;
- Spearhead planning of annual Team retreats;
Develop and Maintain Litigation Practice Infrastructure
- Assess, improve, and manage internal litigation systems and technology, including litigation docket, calendar, document management, conflicts checks, and time-keeping systems;
- Implement and monitor internal litigation policies, procedures, and protocols, and identify opportunities to promote efficiency and implement improved practices;
- Ensure centralized resources are timely maintained and accurate;
- Manage law library and online legal research accounts;
- Review common-interest agremeents and retainer agreements;
Lead Hiring and Professional Development
- CoordinateTeam recruitment, hiring, and onboarding;
- Lead professional development training program for attorneys and paralegals, including by developing programming, identifying speakers, and managing CLE accreditation;
- Monitor attorney compliance with continuing legal education requirements and bar admissions and renewals;
- Work closely with Team’s litigation assistants/paralegals to ensure appropriate assignments and professional development.
The ideal candidate will bring the following experience, skill, and approach:
- Minimum of five years professional experience managing complex projects and teams, including the demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, and meet demanding deadlines;
- Experience working in a litigation environment, particularly in legal operations or litigation practice management;
- Minimum two years professional experience supervising support staff or others;
- Ability to handle complex and sensitive discussions and processes with diplomacy;
- Aptitude for developing talent and supporting a positive and diverse team culture;
- Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building relationships, including managing external relationships and internal intra- and inter-department relationships;
- Experience working with senior leadership of a law firm, non-profit, or other legal organization;
- Expertise in working with technology;
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including demonstrated skill in facilitating meetings and delivering clear presentations;
- J.D. or law license strongly preferred;
- Experience in a legal non-profit preferred;
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest or public service work preferred.

NRDC anticipates the candidate will continue in the position for up to three years. Although established as a three year position, NRDC could extend the position. This position will at all times remain an at will position.
