The International Board provides guidance and leadership to the Amnesty International movement worldwide. Leaders on the International Board play a vital role in helping to advance and achieve Amnesty International’s shared vision of a world in which every person can enjoy freedom, equality and justice. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

We are looking for a highly-qualified and motivated International Treasurer with the required competencies and personal qualities needed to strengthen our International Board in the following area:  

International financial management 

To succeed in this role, you will have a proven track record in international financial management including risk management and have a good understanding of non-profit sector finance. 

  • Ensure the financial stability of Amnesty International Limited by providing strong fiduciary oversight over its financial management   
  • Ensure financial risks facing the organization are identified and managed, recommending appropriate action when relevant 
  • Ensure the proper investment of Amnesty International funds and that it has appropriate reserves and investment policies 
  • Oversee the process of appointing auditors, and act as the chief liaison between the Board and the external auditors to formally present the accounts to the International Board  
  • Provide global oversight of entities managed by the International Secretariat and sections, structures and pre-structures, which - in line with trademark and license agreements - act locally and globally on behalf of Amnesty International 
  • Keep the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities 

The International Treasurer is elected to office for a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms by the Global Assembly, Amnesty International’s highest governance entity. Exceptionally, in 2019 the International Treasurer will be elected for a four-year term to achieve staggered term limits on the International Board. 

If successful, you will join a team of International Board members who meet approximately four times per year, as well as attend some of the movement’s key international meetings. In addition, the International Treasurer automatically becomes the Chairperson of the Finance and Audit Committee (FAC) upon election.  The role of International Treasurer is not paid, although expenses for travel will be reimbursed.

Key governance responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Ensuring that Amnesty International complies with its governing documents (the Articles of Association), UK company law, charity law, the Amnesty International Statute any other relevant legislation or regulations 
  • Providing high-quality, independent fiduciary oversight of Amnesty International's financial resources 
  • Responsible for strategic leadership, accountability for managing institutional risks, whether financial, operational, reputational, environmental, sector-related, or legal 
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability and actively holding International Secretariat management to account for delivering the organization's strategic goals 
  • Appointing and supporting the Secretary General and monitoring their performance 
  • Acting as a responsible employer. Ensuring there are appropriate policies and procedures in place to care for the welfare of International Secretariat staff, including setting safeguarding policy across the organization 
  • Reviewing organizational health indicators and performance information.
