350.org is looking for Associate General Counsel to manage the legal function of the organization. If you are a seasoned attorney with a passion for climate justice and activism and looking to bring your expertise to a new team, we need your help!
The Associate General Counsel will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will work closely with department heads and functional leaders to provide legal guidance to facilitate informed strategy and decision-making at all levels of the organization, from Frontline Staff to Senior Leadership to the Board of Directors, from campaign messaging to national strategy to international governance.
The Associate General Counsel will manage and coordinate all legal guidance to the organization. This management and coordination will take a wide variety of forms, including directly applying legal knowledge to needs in the organization as well as managing pro-bono and paid outside counsel relationships and requests in countries around the world. The Associate General Counsel will be responsible for the establishment of internal governance policy and procedural guidelines to ensure decision making is informed by the best legal guidance available. The Associate General Counsel will provide advice and counsel regarding a wide range of legal matters, will participate in strategic and planning initiatives, and will provide proactive advice regarding the host of legal risks facing the organization.
Specific Legal Topics Include:
- 501(c)(3)/(c)(4) exemption, including lobbying, ethics and cost allocations, and political law
- Labor and employment matters (US and international)
- International incorporation and corporate compliance
- Freedom of expression and rights of assembly
- Actions support, including pre-action briefings and support of activists through the legal system
- Data privacy, including GDPR, licensing, trademarks and copyright
- Contracts, including drafting, negotiation and dispute resolution
- Document management & retention
- Governance, including international governance and affiliates
- Communications, including intellectual property, defamation, social media, rights clearance, and consumer protections
- Fundraising, including charitable solicitation registrations, planned giving, events, and restricted/unrestricted gifts
- Finance, including investments, endowment, Form 990, tax issues, and debt
- Litigation
- A minimum of 7 years in practice
- Experience with US 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) non-profit organizations
- Experience as an attorney working internationally or with an international organization
- Excellent verbal and written English communications, drafting, and negotiation skills
- Strong legal, analytical, organizational, and collaboration skills
- An ability to travel internationally, generally between two and four times per year
- An ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
- An ability to multitask and determine priority projects/assignments
- An ability to consistently apply good judgment and make good and responsible decisions
- An ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and discretion
- A deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Passion for and alignment with 350.org’s vision, mission, and progressive values
Desired (But Not Required) Skills and Experiences
- Fluency or conversational ability in additional non-English languages
- Experience working with or working for pro-bono or reduced-fee legal programs
- Experience working as in-house counsel
Salary: $93,000 USD
