The Western Region Director (WD) develops, manages and advances community-based conservation efforts, plans and methods in the Western region initially with the focus on Khovd province. WC will be based in Khovd with frequent travels to Ulaanbaatar and other provinces
The WD is in charge of strategic implementation of the project in the region and provides technical leadership and support to a business unit, plans and directs community-based conservation and stewardship. The WD addresses critical CBC issues in Khovd province by providing decisive inputs to CBC development and planning process, oversees, directs and leads on-ground project interventions. The WD acts a liaison person in western region to build and ensure close partnership cooperation with local government in supporting the project in delivering long-term results and impact in CBC. WD coordinates with the business unit to support them in making decisions relevant to the management, maintenance and expansion of protected areas within the region.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Based in Khovd, WD be responsible for and supervises all aspects in relation to development, planning, implementation, resource mobilization, reporting of project interventions in CBC implementation and development.
- Performs tasks with minimal supervision and delivers maximum quality results by mobilizing available resources and local coordinators and data, analysis, experience and context and by
- Strengthens and maintains a partnership cooperation with local government authorities and institutions level to ensure stakeholders’ engagement in CBC development
- In partnership with M&E Officer makes periodic analyses of the regional situation and development trend and if deemed required provides recommendation and inputs to adaptive planning and possible alteration
- Ensures project concept, vision and strategy is contributing to and integrated in the regional/provincial development policies and strategies
- Advocates project interventions and outcomes at regional level and seeks for opportunities to replicate project best practices
- 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
- Experience negotiating
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree or higher in business management and administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in project cycle planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation
- Experience working in government organizations at the leadership position is an asset
- At least 10 years’ experience in the leadership position, managing staff
- Knowledge of existing legislations and regulation in natural resource management, land management and environmental governance
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource use
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., government officials, communities, scientists, media.
- Familiarity with working with herders and local communities in conservation actions
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Excellent communication skills in Mongolian and English preferably
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
