The YMCA of Orange County has an immediate need for aController. The Controller is responsible for daily operations, leadership and development of the Business Department; Accounting, andFinance functions. Our organization is growing. Additionally, we are continuously striving to improve operational and financial processes. The Controller is an integral part of the leadership team providing financial vision and strategic skills to the organization.

Provides leadership and manages the daily operations of the Accounting Department providing relevant, timely and accurate information to internal and external constituents in accordance with GAAP and financial reporting for not-for-profit entities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages financial accounting for the association per accounting standards and YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Oversees development of budget tools and leads coordination of the budget process annually.
  • Manages the reporting process used in planning, budgeting & cost control.
  • Maintains software systems related to budgeting and accounting with upgrades and or changes.
  • Coordinates with Payroll, to ensure the proper coding is set up in the Payroll system.
  • Ensures compliance in reporting to regulatory agencies i.e.; IRS, Attorney General, Audit preparation, YUSA reporting etc.
  • Coordinates & creates ad hoc reporting as needed or requested to inform leaders and operations of data and statistics.
  • Reviews and analyze financial reports monthly.
  • Develops and monitors Key Performance Indicators.
  • Ensures financial reports are created monthly for accurate board of Director and Finance committee meetings.
  • Meets with relevant leadership to review financial results and make recommendations for process improvement and expense control.
  • Monitors grant administration and timely payments.
  • Manages fixed assets, capital expenditures and depreciation accurately and timely.
  • Participates on project task teams including but not limited to software changes and upgrades.
  • Follows and enforces safety standards and other policies and procedures.
  • Develops and monitors appropriate internal controls.
  • Monitors and reports on Investments.
  • Provides strategic and financial vision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES: In accordance with applicable policies/procedures and Federal/State laws, may perform the following supervisory responsibilities: Interviewing, hiring, orienting, and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; coaching and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining staff; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Educational Background: 
4-year college degree in accounting required. CPA or MBA preferred. Additional years of experience may offset aportion of the educational requirement.
Skills/Experience: 

The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties & responsibilities of this position. Please note that the minimum qualifications may vary based upon the department size and/or geographic location.

  • 5 years supervisory and corporate accounting experience; ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word required. Proficiency in GAAP and financial reporting for not-for-profit entities
  • Ability to think strategically, synthesize business/financial data & develop innovative solutions
  • Ability to manage accounting and financial reporting functions in an environment with multiple entities and cost centers
  • Ability to effectively manage annual audit
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Ability to be an effective member of and lead project teams.
  • Ability to initiate & facilitate progressive change.
