The Boreal Program Manager will be a key member of TNC Canada’s Boreal team. S/he will use superb project management and communication skills to ensure the Boreal team is working as efficiently and effectively as possible in successfully implementing current conservation projects in Manitoba and Alberta, and in the development of future Boreal whole system strategies. S/he reports to the Boreal Conservation Director. The Boreal Program is working to secure lasting conservation results in this globally significant landscape by supporting stronger Indigenous leadership and authority over natural resources management and advancing economic opportunities that benefit local communities and align with both cultural and conservation values.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Boreal Program Manager will provide grant, project, and overall program management support as a member of the Boreal Program team.
- S/he will work towards meeting the strategic priorities of the Boreal program by implementing tactics for approved plans, and completing day-to-day tasks and activites;
- S/he will coordinate both core Boreal program, and larger cross-departmental Boreal project team meetings, communications and information flow, including knowledge and document management;
- S/he will manage large grants, providing project management support across all work streams, and playing a lead role in knowledge management and grant reporting, ensuring that all internal and donor requirements are met;
- S/he will support the development of new grant proposals in concert with the fundraising team through project management support, coordination and writing;
- S/he will support the development and maintenance of communications materials for the Boreal program in collaboration with marketing staff; and
- S/he will support the Program Director in the management of Boreal program finances.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Provide grant, project and program management in support of TNC Canada’s Boreal program;
- Manage and coordinate projects with several variables, work within a defined timeline and budget;
- Serves as a team leader for assigned projects, acting independently on assigned tasks and exercising independent judgment based on analysis and experience;
- Will coordinate and manage work of peers on cross-departmental project teams;
- Ensure compliance with Conservancy policies and procedures, and external (donor/legal/government) requirements;
- Financial responsibility includes purchasing, processing invoices, contracting with vendors, and working with the Program Director with budget management and preparation;
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information;
- Refer difficult questions and unusual problems to supervisor;
- Work within scope of program’s strategic goals; and
- Travel and work flexible hours as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination;
- Project management experience;
- Experience coordinating administrative processes;
- Experience synthesizing data and generating reports;
- Experience in business writing, editing, and proofreading;
- Strong organization skills, accuracy, and attention to detail;
- Experience organizing time and managing diverse activities to meet deadlines; and
- Experience working across teams and communicating with a wide range of people.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience managing large, complex projects involving multiple teams and stakeholders to successful completion;
- Grant writing, management and reporting experience;
- Excellent communications skills;
- Budget management experience;
- Ability to analyze information for the purpose of coordinating and planning activities, and foreseeing and solving problems;
- Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and motivate a large and geographically dispersed team;
- Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff;
- Experience with project management software and tools;
- Knowledge of the Canadian Boreal forest, or the Boreal ecosystem in general, appreciated but not required; and
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experiences are appreciated.
