The Chief Operating Officer serves as a member of the President/CEO’s senior leadership team and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the association.  The COO will provide strategic direction to the operations team to grow community impact through efficient use of our resources.  As well, the COO will ensure a balanced operational budget through sustainable membership and program revenue growth and purposeful expense management.  The incumbent will create and support an atmosphere of belonging, relationships and achievement along with a premier user experience for our entire membership community.  This role will drive innovation, foster collaborations, and help position the YMCA as the most capable organization to improve the health and well-being of our Tampa Bay community.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Commitment to the Quality of our Member Experience 

  • Proactively creates an environment for staff members where great customer service is rewarded, striving to provide a great experience every day for all members.
  • Will work alongside the senior leadership team to build and sustain a cause-centered culture enabling the Y to deliver on our commitment to serve all people and fulfill our brand promise to strengthen the foundations of our community.
  • Hire the right people and build a strong team.  Empower staff at all levels to make decisions that enhance our member’s experience in our Ys and in our programs. 

Program & Membership Growth and Quality

  • Responsible for operational growth of the Association through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development and collaborations.
  • Assures all operational decisions support the strategic plan objectives and the cause-driven values of the Association.
  • Consistently evaluates the quality of our programs and initiatives; driving innovation to keep them fresh and impactful to members, program participants and the community partners.
  • Identifies opportunities to standardize best practices to promote consistency in quality across the association. 

Financial and Risk Management 

  • Ensures financially sound operations with a healthy balance between growth in earned revenue and appropriate expense management.
  • A positive member experience is considered with every financial decision.
  • In partnership with the CFO, leads risk management initiatives for the Association. Ensures policies and procedures are consistently implemented across the Association to create a safe and productive environment for staff, members and program participants.
  • In partnership with Financial Development, ensures commitment to the Annual Giving Campaign goals.

Leading Others

  • Direct supervision of Program Line Executives and Center Executive Directors.
  • Invest in the development of our team, build a strong bench of future leaders and inspire our staff to have ownership in our organizational cause. 
  • Supports leading branch advisory boards and Governance Board, in partnership with the CEO.
  • Provides necessary reports to Committees, the CEO and the Governance Board.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads staff in the planning, development and implementation of new programs and initiatives.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, members and the community.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in business, non-profit management, public relations or related field, or equivalent experience required. Master’s or MBA degree preferred. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of fifteen or more years of successful operational experience in a variety of YMCA's or similar operations required.
  • Currently serving in a senior leadership role and have budget responsibility over $10M within multiple sites along with diverse funding models.
  • Experience in managing strategic partnerships and contracts; experience in developing one, three and 5-year strategic plans for operations.
  • Minimum of eight years of supervisory experience overseeing leadership staff.
  • Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures. Ability to relate and interact with top community leaders.
  • Consistently self-driven and goal-oriented with the ability to set effective team and individual goals and take ownership for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify and leverage relevant data to use in planning and decision-making.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in using email, Internet, and other PC-based applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, customer service/tracking applications) with the ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
  • Successful completion of cognitive and behavioral assessments, background screening and drug test. First Aid, CPR, AED and 02 obtained within first 30 days of employment and then maintained throughout employment.
  • This position requires a valid driver license and will require frequent local travel.
