Under the direction of the Association Aquatics Executive, the Director of Mobile Swim will serveas a roving ambassador for water safety throughout Hillsborough County. The Director will supervise a team mobile swim staff and will directly oversee program delivery, including swim lessons, water safety education and community events.

The Program Director will be responsible for implementing an integrated program strategy to support this grant-funded program while delivering services as outlined by the grant funder to include organization-wide standards and consistencies throughout the program. This will include working with and supervising work completed by a subcontracted partner, completing financial reports, cost reimbursements, data entry, program scheduling, hiring and training staff in addition to other tasks as needed.

The Program Director will provide supervision to the aquatics staff, driving superior program quality. This position ensures that their teams operate efficiently and employs a continuous improvement model to meet and/or exceed goals for grant funder satisfaction, member/participant satisfaction, financial management and overall growth.

Critical areas of expertise include: leading others and working in teams, highly organized program management, delivering and managing programs focusing on quality, successfully overseeing part-time and entry-level teams and interviewing, hiring and onboarding associates.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Program Quality and Growth

Aquatic Operations:

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives as outlined by the grant.
  • Establishes and expands the mobile swim program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans as outline in the grant contract.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed within the mobile swim program.
  • Serves as a pivotal member of the aquatics leadership team.
  • Reviews and evaluates associate performance.
  • Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Responsible for daily program operations and compliance to all state, local and YMCA health & safety regulations.
  • Maintains accurate data and ensures all required grant documents are submitted according to the deadlines provided by the grant funder.

General Functions:

  • Ensures quality programming and “Best in Class” member experience.
  • Responds to member and participant concerns in a timely manner, ensuring a positive program experience for members and participants. Anticipate and exceed expectations consistently throughout the mobile swim program.
  • Develops and implements program survey and measurement strategies and action plans.
  • Participates in development of new programming, strategies, training, and execution of organizational plans to achieve strategic plan targets for programming.
  • Responsible for achievement of program matrix goals, and ensures program meets all fiscal responsibilities as outline in the grant contract.
  • Develops and controls department budget so that resources are used as outline in the grant contract.
  • Serves on Association Aquatics cabinet, innovation teams, training, and conferences as directed.
  • Assists in all other areas as assigned.

Team Leadership

Provides direct supervision and leadership while hiring, developing, motivating and retaining a committed team passionate about the YMCA's mission, safety and service to members, and the Tampa Y promise.

  • Provides direct supervision to all direct reports and ensures their professional development and success.
  • Supervises and works closely with all subcontracted partners participating in the program.
  • Manages associate schedules and payroll for departments ensuring efficient use of resources occurs within programs at all times.
  • Ensures compliance with all grant guidelines and deadlines as outlined by the grant funder in the contract.
  • Completes all job related, supervisory and other trainings as required.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Ensures all Tampa Y program standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures all program associates are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
  • Maintains proper records, including associate certifications, meetings, and trainings.
  • Schedules associates and volunteers in accordance to safety and program needs and ensures all safety and program ratios are followed.
  • Monitors programming to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health & safety regulations.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS in Sports Management/Recreation/Health Sciences or related field preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in aquatics or similar with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a Y (or similar) membership organization serving up to 1,900 households preferred
  • Proven results in increasing program quality and growth through exceptional planning and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to meet or exceed goals, cultivate and retain program participants.
  • Ability to quickly build rapport and develop effective relationships with program prospects and others to achieve goals.
  • Consistently self-driven and goal-oriented with the ability to set effective team and individual goals and take ownership for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify and leverage relevant data to use in planning and decision-making.
  • Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures.
  • Proficient in using email, Internet, and other PC-based applications with the ability to learn and adapt to new technology
