This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Vice President of Mission Advancement at the YMCA of Central New York serves on the CEO’s senior leadership team and provides strategic leadership in financial development, volunteerism, marketing, and communication to advance the YMCAs mission through annual giving, grants, endowment bequests and gifts, and capital campaigns. The Vice President of Mission Advancement assists the CEO in developing an actively engaged fundraising volunteer board of directors and positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues. This position also builds the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact by providing leadership that results in effective marketing and communications strategies. The Vice President of Mission Advancement provides leadership and assures the well-being for all in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies.

  • Models and teaches the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with members, colleagues, staff, guests, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Develops, maintains, and facilitates positive relationships with and between volunteers, members, program participants, staff, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Leads and supervises the Mission Advancement team which includes all aspects of financial development, volunteerism, marketing, and communications.
  • Develops organizational goals and strategic plans for fundraising, balancing long-term direction and short-term requirements. Develops systems and manages resources, including the financial development budget, needed to carry out the fundraising and marketing plans. Develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the association.
  • Engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward new and existing donors with an emphasis on key major gift donors and prospects.
  • Oversees donor database, database standard operating processes, donor recognition, gift processing, gift acceptance, online giving, and donor stewardship activities.
  • Tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides reports as needed.
  • Manage and coordinate annual campaign kick-off event, annual campaign celebrations, and annual major donor celebration.
  • Secure sponsorships for Y events. Support additional events including the Y’s annual meeting.
  • Directs and coordinates association capital development, annual campaign and planned giving programs.
  • Create fundraising materials including proposals, foundation and corporate grant requests, direct mail appeals, thank you letters, newsletters, and e-mail solicitations.
  • Provide leadership for communications and public awareness efforts for the Association. Primary responsibilities include branding, establishing consistent messaging, and increasing awareness of YMCA mission work in order to increase membership, program participation, contributions and revenue.
  • Develop materials and provide training to branch staff, board members, and volunteers on raising financial support for the Y. Educates, motivates and provides feedback to individuals related to best practices in the fundraising process.
  • Actively engages the board in challenging conversations and decision making to advance the Y's impact when serving as the primary staff liaison to the Mission Advancement Committee and other assigned committees on the Board of Directors. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
  • Represents the YMCA of Central New York in the community as needed.
  • Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and those for the prevention of child abuse; and supports other staff to do the same.
  • Pursues training opportunities that support the work of the YMCA.
  • Provides sound fiscal management and meets deadlines in assigned areas.
  • Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience with a background in fundraising in the YMCA or another non-profit preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Successful community leadership experience, especially in convening local stakeholders and responding to specified community needs. Must have demonstrated success in building and maintaining strong community relationships.
  • Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
  • Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
  • Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.
  • Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
  • CFRE or equivalent preferred.
  • Able to work flexible schedules
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $75,000.00 - $90,000.00
