Under the direction of the Sr. Program Director of Childcare, the School Age Child Care Program Director is responsible for the development, planning, and delivery of quality extended before and/or after school and summer day camp programming.  In addition to program management, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations in the areas of staff supervision, administration, collaborative relationships, and fiscal management.  The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse is conveyed and incorporated into the daily programming.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Program Development and Promotion

  • Manages, directs, and implements dynamic extended day school age and summer camp programs for assigned locations.  Ensures high quality programs and establishes new program activities.  Expands programs within the Community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develops, manages and controls budgets related to assigned areas.  Ensures program operates within budget, annual income goals are met and that program fees are collected.
  • Promotes and advertises the extended school age and camp programs, create flyers and brochures, ensure community awareness of the available programs, and recruits new participants.
  • Develops a well-rounded schedule of facilities that meets family and children’s needs.
  • Compiles program statistics.  Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of programs.
  • Develops and implements vacation day programs.
  • Maintains program areas and equipment in an orderly and safe manner, according to Association and YMCA standards.
  • Plans and coordinates maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment as required in assigned areas.
  • Responds to all agency, parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Communicates with parents and explains policies, fees, regulations, and curriculum.  Also ensures policy changes are communicated to parents in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Utilizes YMCA HEPA standards and implements healthy eating and physical activity standards into program areas.
  • Accepts responsibility for and ensures compliance with all state and local regulations that are required by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and New York State Health Department, as they relate to assigned program areas.

Staff Development and Supervision

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive staff development plan in the areas of responsibility.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, disciplines, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers in assigned areas, creating and fostering a staff environment that is positive, professional and member focused, ensuring excellence in member satisfaction at all times.
  • Performs all supervisory and administrative duties in assigned area; ensures preparation and submission of all required reports and payroll are processed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance, develops strategies to motivate staff to develop competencies that support and achieve the Association and department goals.  Ensures duties, responsibilities and accountabilities of all direct reports are defined and understood.  Effectively communicates to staff the standards for performance.
  • Ensures high quality programs through innovative program development, evaluations, ongoing training of Staff and ensure all staff maintains their required certifications.  Ensures staff complete all required trainings. 

Collaborative Relationships

  • Identify and develop relationships with community service organizations and government agencies with which the YMCA can collaborate to strengthen and expand SACC and Camping programs and services.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with: Office of Children and Family Services, Department of Health, local school districts and personnel, children, parents, parent groups, members, staff, and volunteers and provides motivational support and guidance to all. 

Fiscal Management

  • Develops, implements, manages and controls budgets for School Age Child Care programs and summer camps, and produces all monthly reports as required by your supervisor.
  • Ensures timely billing and collection of program fees including DSS. 

Volunteer Development

  • Recruit and develop program volunteers.
  • Recruit and engage parents in a Parent Advisory Committee. 

Association Duties

  • Serves as a vital and contributing member of the Association management team.
  • Holds monthly staff meetings, and attend all mandatory management meetings.  Actively pursues training and learning opportunities and certifications relating to the position; maintain current certifications required by the position.
  • Provides staff leadership for annual fund raising and committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Sr. Program Director.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development, Elementary or Physical Education, Recreation, or related field or Child Development Credential (CDA) with equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13.
  • Minimum one-year experience in management of childcare programs, supervision of staff and budget management.
  • Knowledge of childcare and camp licensing requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Position requires the ability to make independent decisions, which adhere to the purpose, mission, and values of the YMCA.
  • Must have cleared fingerprints and a State Clearance Form from New York State.
  • Successfully complete the YMCA of the USA Team Leader Certification within two years of employment.
  • Competencies in program development, administration, supervision and fiscal management of assigned budgets.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Programs, especially word, excel and publisher experience with data base management software.
  • Must be computer proficient using Microsoft Office software programs.
  • Demonstrates excellent planning, organizational, time management, and attention to detail skills, with the ability to multi-task with minimal direction.
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent customer service, supervising, decision-making, problem solving team oriented, creative thinking and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills in an outgoing, friendly, assertive, professional, and mature manner.
  • Demonstrates a passion for high standards within the YMCA’s key areas of focus: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities, organizational skills, project management, time management, detail orientated.
  • The ability to observe confidentiality.
