This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Child Care Administrator, the Site Director will strategically plan, develop, and effectively administer programs that provide a warm and loving environment where children will be safe, and can grow and learn in a positive environment, building positive self-esteem and the skills needed for advancing into the school years.

The 21C Site Director is responsible for overseeing a safe, engaging, and educational environment in collaboration with the school district and staff, the YMCA, and the families and children served by this 21C after-school program. This is accomplished through building collaborative relationships, meeting 21C grant requirements, delivering creative programming, and leading a staff and volunteers to deliver quality programming. This is a 10-month position at 25 hours per week from mid-August through mid-June.Curriculum to includeextended learning opportunities in STEAM, visual/performing arts, and environmental education, as well as access to tutoring and homework help for 50+ students in grades K-5.

In addition, the 21C Director will work directly in YMCA programming to complete this full-time position. The 21C Site Director will also direct YMCA Summer Camp in Sturgeon Bay, direct School Day Out programming, and flow into other Youth/Child Care programming as needed and scheduled.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and manage 21C programming at Southern Door School and Camp/Out of School Programming for the YMCA. These programs will advance YMCA philosophies, policies, and goals, while adhering to licensing and grant objectives. Daily curriculum will fully engage and support optimal physical and emotional child development.
  • Direct daily ratios and work schedules to guarantee efficient operations. Review and create daily lesson plans to ensure they are aligned with strategic goals and program mission. Engage community partners to ensure a culturally relevant and community-oriented curriculum.
  • The Site Director is the lead staff at the Southern Door 21C program and should be present 90% of programmed hours.
  • Broach sensitive topics carefully and respectfully to collaborate on solutions; work effectively with the staff teams and partners, and people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions to ensure a positive experience for all stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate understanding of student/family needs; ensuring the Y is accessible to all; actively engage participants at every age and ability. In all situations, effectively role model SMART service.
  • Collaboratively establish and consistently meet program goals and maintain ongoing program evaluation and administrative duties to ensure high quality and accurate records.
  • Effective communication with staff, parent, students, and school staff, and partners: listen for understanding and meaning, speak and write effectively. Effectively tailor communications to the appropriate audience to ensure understanding and collaboration.
  • Keep parents, school and YMCA staff and partners abreast of program activities.
  • Maintain accurate attendance counts and ensure bookkeeping records reflect accurate charges to create a positive partnership with families and resource agencies.
  • Assist in preparing annual income and expense budget for directed programs for approval by the VP-Administration and CEO. Administer the approved budget. Whenever necessary, recommend adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation.
  • Serve as safety responder in directed programs (responding, reporting, and preventing): adhere to and enforce safety policies and procedures for the Association and school. Ensure staff and volunteers are trained and systems are in place to ensure the safety and security of each student. Ensure safe conditions exist at all times. Closely monitor attendance of each student to ensure all are accounted for.
  • Provide a welcoming learning environment; make a special effort to greet all participants and their families; encourage positive relationship building among families. Enable parent participation in all levels of the program; facilitate daily parent discussion and encourage parent participation in social interaction with other families.
  • Provide Staff with feedback, development opportunities, coaching, information, guidance, and support. Provide learning opportunities for parents and students in a similar manner. Utilize non-threatening methods to address sensitive issues and inappropriate behavior or performance.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance job performance and maintain all certifications. Must maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Work independently and with others, respond to a fast-paced environment. The ability to manage personal feelings, strengths, and limitations and a willingness to accept feedback and make corrections is essential.
Educational Background: 
At least 21 years of age and a Bachelor’s degree is required; preferably in Education, Child Psychology, Human Development, or Elementary Education.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Registry Level 12 or higher.
  • Minimum 6 months working with large groups of school-age children is required.
  • Must possess strong organizational, leadership and administrative skills. Must be proficient in MS Excel.
  • Experience working with economically disadvantaged children with diverse backgrounds is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
  • Conversational Spanish speaking skills preferred.
