The Pocono Family YMCA was established in Monroe County in 1914 and has prospered to a $2.1M association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of youth, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe our purpose in Monroe County is to create that lasting personal and social change by working together to invest in our youth, our health and our neighbors.
Salary Range: $75,000-$85,000
Benefits: Health care plan (i.e. medical, dental and vision), long term disability and vacation, as well as other benefits per the personnel policy. YMCA pays 8% retirement contribution per eligibility requirements (www.yretirement.org).

Mission Statement: To be an open organization that puts Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
History: The Pocono Family YMCA was established on July 17, 1914 as the "Young Men's Christian Association of the Stroudsburgs" for the purpose of improving the spiritual, mental, social and physical condition of young men. In 1982, the name of the association was changed to "Pocono Family YMCA" to better reflect the community we serve.
Geographic Service Area: Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, Brodheadsville, Saylorsburg, Tannersville, Tobyhanna, Mount Pocono, Dingmans Ferry, Blairstown/Hackettstown (NJ), Sciota, Marshalls Creek, Effort, and Bartonsville.
Staff: 23 full time staff; 107 part time; 12 seasonal. 7 direct reports to CEO: Program Assistant, Executive Assistant/HR Assistant, Business Manager, Facility Director, Director of Youth Development, Director of Healthy Living and Director of Social Responsibility.
Volunteer Leadership: 18 Board Members. Additionally, 250 volunteers engaged annually to help the Y deliver on its mission.
Membership: 2823 individuals/1755 member units. Membership breakdown: Youth 15%, Teens 5%, Seniors 41%, Senior Family 5%, Family 21% and Adults 13%.
Finances: 2017 budget of $2.1M. YMCA continuing to improve financial position: 2014 - $11K deficit; 2015 - $257K deficit and 2016 (with a $2M budget) had a $19K deficit. Current debt: $24K in outstanding accounts payables; $580K mortgage; $36K Line of Credit; $7K in Lockwood Loan. Lockwood Endowment $21K.
Annual Fundraising & Financial Assistance Awarded: Raised $36K in 2016; 2017 $31K raised currently. Awarded $104,000 in 2016. Currently awarded $156,000 to date in 2017. Annual support has impacted more than 235 families in 2016 and we are on track to service more than 300 families this year.
Membership Facility: The facility was built and renovated in 3 stages in 1914, 1953 and 1979. The building, which is in need of updating, is 101,000 sq. ft. and includes a 3 lane pool, group exercise studio, cardio suite, free weight room, weight equipment room, gymnasium, meeting space, and 3 classrooms. Board Expectations: The board believes its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit the achievement of excellence in the following roles including that of strategic planning:
- Build and Manage the Staff Team: Serve as a leader who can motivate, engage and reward staff in a positive and productive manner. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff performance and development leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement. Maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, and values.
- Improve Operating Performance and Financial Sustainability: Provide effective leadership to improve the Y’s fiscal performance to develop a healthy and financially sustainable organization. Work with the Board and staff to develop long-term and annual tactical plans for achieving key goals and objectives.
- Focus on Membership and Program Expansion: Continue growing and retaining membership as well as expanding programs to have an even greater reach and impact. Gain an understanding of community needs and the Y’s role in addressing the most critical needs as they relate to Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Serve a valued community partner, working with others, to achieve goals.
- Advocate the YMCA Vision and Be the Heart and Soul of the Organization: Proactively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff, volunteers and the community. Serve as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision for the YMCA within the community as a respected leader with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA.
- Lead Fundraising Efforts: Serve as the leader in fundraising efforts by working with the board to establish a plan for how the Y will raise additional annual contributed dollars for operations and providing financial assistance as well as capital dollars for facility renovations and expansion. Ensure public and private partnerships and resources are developed to support operational and future needs by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
Minimum Candidate Criteria:
- Accredited 4-year college degree (required/non-negotiable).
- Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization/company.
- Proven successful track record of fiscal management for a complex organization more than $1M annually.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
- Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and effective in broadening engagement in the community.
- Demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
- Successful annual fundraising experience.
Preferred Candidate Criteria:
- Experience in capital development; capital fundraising and facility development.
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via Y-USA).
