Yoga Corporate Group Exercise Instructor

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. Effectively build community within class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs. Collects and reports necessary class data.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with class participants; helps participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health and culture.
  • Celebrates achievement of participants related to class or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records and data. Reports data to supervisor within required timeframe.
  • Promote and effectively communicate the value of a YMCA membership with class participants. Be able to explain the process for joining the Y.
  • Promote and effectively communicate the value of YMCA Corporate Membership offerings and Community Health programs (YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program, corporate lunch ‘n learns, etc.) Assist in facilitating other Community Health Programs as needed (lunch ‘n learn presentations, screening events, health coaching, etc.)
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • 3-7 years of experience as a group exercise instructor
  • Group exercise certification from a Y-USA recognized organization.
  • Specialty instructor certifications as needed (i.e., Zumba, Yoga, etc.)
  • Must possess health coaching skills and Listen First/Motivational Interviewing skills.
  • Must possess reliable transportation to be able to travel to multiple off-site class locations through the St. Louis region.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Physical Mobility: walking, climbing, stairs, standing, kneeling, bending, leaning, stooping and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Physical Dexterity: ability to use telephone, computer, electronic equipment, exercise equipment, office equipment (fax, copier, stapler, etc.), tools and machinery as needed.
  • Lifting: ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Sensory Requirements: ability to hear, listen, speak, smell, touch, taste, see and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
