Teach For America- St. Louis is seeking an Associate, Development to support the operations of the Development Team in a way that maximizes the team’s effectiveness and enables the team to reach its ambitious communication and development goals. The Associate, Development provides critical operational support focused around the communication and investment of our corps members, alumni, donors and community partners. The Associate, Development (AD) must be a natural self-starter, excel in creating and maintaining organizational systems, and possess a strong customer service ethic. The Associate will report directly to [Director of Development, but will work with various individuals from across the team as well as external constituencies].

This position is an excellent way to gain exposure to nonprofit fundraising, engagement and communications, including development operations, donor and prospect research, grant writing, constituent communications and event planning.  To be successful, the AD must: be able to organize, prioritize and track a large volume of projects and tasks; possess exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for quality; and be a critical thinker who displays sound judgment in prioritizing actions based on outcomes.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Coordinate External Stewardship Operations (15%)

  • Maintain a comprehensive fundraising database and files that includes accurate donor information (background research, biography, etc.)
  • Efficiently track all communications, actions, events, and  fundraising commitments for each donor in the portfolio and provide team with progress to goal and benchmark information
  • Process gifts; write, manage and track gift acknowledgements
  • Own cash collection systems and processes, including pledge reminders, quarterly cash targets and reconciliation in our database
  • Work closely with the rest of the External Stewardship Team to manage the calendar of all development activities and to maximize opportunities that span multiple funding streams
  • Create meeting agendas for External Stewardship Team meetings
  • Create and manage External Stewardship Team systems document and the team-wide operations plan

Grants Management (20%)

  • Act as project lead and main driver for grants, reports, and proposals, including gathering key data, partnering with functional teams, writing grant narratives, and ensuring on-time submittal and excellence in delivery.
  • Serve as the point person for AmeriCorps relationships in partnership with the Kansas City region and support AmeriCorps compliance through partnership with the A, Continuum.
  • Ensure timely submission of state funding reports by partnering with the KC region to ensure materials and data are shared with the appropriate parties as needed.

Provide Administrative Support (15%)

  • Assume a proactive role in increasing the efficiency and organization of the External Stewardship Team
  • Prepare meeting packets, toolkits, and mailings
  • Schedule and calendar management and coordination for regional External Stewardship Team
  • Assists with the coordination of the Alumni Engagement Committee and the Development and Engagement Committee
  • Manage and effectively track the External Stewardship Team budget and engage in monthly meetings with the office budget tracker
  • Track American Express expenses for External Stewardship team

Serve as Corps Member & Alumni Liaison (10%)

  • Work with the Director of Public Contracts and corps members to collect all necessary documents and to ensure AmeriCorps compliance
  • Communicate with corps members regarding events and distribution of tickets, events or opportunities offered by board members and donors
  • Manage corps member responsibilities in the Sponsor A Teacher program through regular communication of expectations and deadlines, tracking corps member participation, and engaging corps members in conversations around the importance of the program
  • Identify, recruit and train corps members to engage with external supporters and manage all corps member interactions with development efforts

Support Cultivation and Stewardship of Donors and Prospects (15%)

  • Work closely with the External Stewardship team to plan and execute a sequence of communications, actions and events for each donor in the portfolio to increase their understanding of and commitment to Teach For America
  • Prepare and support External Stewardship team members to execute actions in line with the strategic and operational plans and monitor progress against plan (i.e., prepare meeting briefs and materials, capture meeting downloads, prep donor follow-up, draft correspondence, track when tasks are completed, identify when tasks are overdue, etc.)
  • Support the team in producing high-quality written communications by:
  • Drafting, proofreading and editing communications
  • Compiling data and supplementary materials (financial reports, news articles, statistics on programmatic initiatives, corps member/alumni anecdotes, etc.)
  • Partnering with the national marketing team to adapt templates and other materials as needed
  • Collect and synthesize relevant statistics, stories, and anecdotes to be used by the team in tailoring donor pitches and meeting materials
  • Planning and running inspiring events and school visits including: managing all logistics and preparation; creating and compiling materials; coordinating hosts, corps members, alumni and speakers, and managing execution of follow-up

Manage Development Operations (15%)

Conduct Prospect Research and Data Analysis (10%)

  • Conduct research to identify potential donors to add to region’s prospect list specifically looking for evidence of whether a prospect is mission-aligned, has capacity to contribute and whether there are existing connections we can leverage to get in front of the prospect
  • Conduct research on new and existing donors to identify motivations and barriers to contributing to our organization and potential levers to deepen their connection to and support of our work
  • Prepare tailored meeting briefs and materials based on research and analysis  
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree preferred, not required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience strongly preferred
