State & Community Engagement (SCE) is part of Community, State and National Affairs (CSN). The SCE team includes: 53 states and territories across 6 regions with regional management, the Office of Volunteer Engagement, the Office of Community Engagement (including the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA): AARP’s Educator Community), and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE).

Summary Statement

Contributes to the achievement of strategic priorities by providing professional level coordination for state and community operations, communications, or advocacy by providing technical assistance and project support to staff and volunteers. Implements volunteer recruitment, training and development strategies and supports team in areas related to volunteerism.  Manages projects, creates project-related materials, and determines resources necessary to complete projects.  Makes presentations, keeps records, prepares reports, and drafts technical correspondence.  May perform a combination of the following duties described below depending upon assignment. 

 


Responsibilities

1. Serves as a member of the state team and contributes to the development and implementation of AARP’s presence in St. Louis.  Assits in training volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes.  Ensures that proper resources are available to volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing materials.  Works to fully engage volunteers in community outreach, communications and advocacy activities as they relate to the state plan. Develops and implements volunteer recruitment, training and development strategies and supports team in all areas related to volunteerism.  Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events.

2. Works to engage members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach and policy maker relationship activities in support of the AARP state plan and St. Louis local plan.   

3. Engages volunteers in direct advocacy activities.  Assists with the development and coordination of grassroots mobilization efforts for the purpose of influencing policy makers and demonstrating support of AARP priorities.  

4. Supports AARP St. Louis’s  online presence via social media by helping craft and schedule Twitter tweets and Facebook posting.

5. Assists with volunteer management which includes but is not limited to the intake of new volunteers, orientation, expenses and volunteer needs.

6. Helps manage fulfillment requests and maintains the storage of AARP publications, materials and banners.

7. Assists the engagement staff on the marketing, outreach and logistics for events and sponsorship

8. Demonstrates AARP Leadership behaviors in all interactions.

 


Requirements

-Completion of a Bachelor’s degree required in a related discipline and 3+ of experience in project development, coordination, and implementation techniques; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  .  

-The position requires teleworking from St. Louis. 

-Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.  

-Demonstrated ability to work well with others, lead project teams, task forces, and to collaborate with and forge effective internal and external partnerships across groups and departments, connecting with and exhibiting a solid understanding of partnerships.  

-Ability to prioritize work load assignments and multi-task in a fast paced environment.  

-Must be able to work nights and weekends for events, variable schedule(s) as necessary.

-Proficient with computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Work, Powerpoint, Excel) Cvent and Teradata.

-Travel will be required.
