The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing focused communications and/or media tactics that facilitate comprehension, adoption and advancement of the goals and objectives of the projects managed by The Nature Conservancy’s Eastern Caribbean Program. This position will be based in the St. George’s Grenada office and will support activities in the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. S/he will be expected to collaborate and communicate with media practitioners, government officials, regional and international partner organizations, non-governmental organizations and community groups and be liaison to the media.  The position reports to the Director of Marketing for the Caribbean Division.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Communications Specialist is responsible for implementing and managing communication and media tactics as outlined in approved strategies and plans.  S/he will also create, implement and oversee communications programs for the projects of the Eastern Caribbean Program.  S/he helps facilitate on-going communication between internal and external stakeholders and identifies communication and media needs and opportunities within purview.   S/he helps develop speeches, key messages and talking points as needed.  S/he researches, write and distribute wide variety of communication materials including but not limited to: op-eds, news releases, fact sheets, web articles, blog posts as directed in program marketing plans.  The Communications Specialist employs a variety of communication tactics to communicate goals, objectives and mission.  Actively identifies target audiences and cultivates media contacts on a local and national level.   Develops and fosters relationships with internal and external partners. The Communications Specialist will also serve as an expert in communicating about TNC’s work in the Eastern Caribbean and support communications and promotional tools and storytelling needs for both global TNC and philanthropy, elevating the Eastern Caribbean’s work beyond the region. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Manages and implements projects.
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting assigned project goals and objectives.
  • Serves as team lead on assigned communication and/or media initiatives.
  • Resolves issues independently within program area.
  • Opportunity to act independently within program goals.  
  • May work with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.  

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies. 
  • Experience developing media relations networks.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.  
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills. 
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline. 
  • Experience leading or managing projects.
  • Confident communicator and presenter.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media. 
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management.
