The Coral Science Technician works closely with the USVI Coral Manager and marine conservation practitioners to research and gather coral reef conservation and restoration planning data. This is a short-term (6-month) position based in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, to develop, test, and implement science-based coral conservation and restoration tools as part of TNC’s broader Caribbean Coral Strategy.
The Coral Science Technician gathers and synthesizes data to create conservation activities and implementation plans. They create data collection, management, and analysis tools to measure outcomes of coral restoration and conservation programs at TNC’s Coral Innovation Hub in St. Croix, USVI. The Coral Science Technician supports the USVI Coral Manager and Coral Aquaculture Supervisor in the development of innovative approaches to coral restoration, protection, and monitoring.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Gathers and synthesizes data relating to coral restoration and conservation implementation and/or activities.
- Maintains project records and generates protocol documents for coral restoration project survey techniques.
- Assists with coral restoration projects in field- and land-based nurseries.
- Performs field work as part of a team; may supervise and train interns and volunteers to gather conservation data.
- Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a small group of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
- Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both orally and in written form.
- Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
- May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:
- require physical exertion
- require working on unstable platforms and inclement weather
- present occasional possibility of injury
- require long hours in isolated settings
- Experience with coral reef orthomosaic generation using Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry.
- Experience with aquaculture/wet lab equipment and marine animal husbandry.
- Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
- 50-100 SCUBA dives minimum.
- SCUBA certification and qualified to meet AAUS Dive Safety Standards (www.aaus.org). Scientific diving experience preferred. Must have Rescue Diver certification prior to starting the position.
- Experience with common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
- Database management experience including report production.
- Ability to repeatedly lift up to 40 lbs.
- Current CPR, First Aid and Oxygen First Aid Certifications and Diving Medical Exam preferred.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
