Context: The Springfield Representative plans, organizes, and implements the Chapter’s state and local legislative priorities and government interactions.

Scope: Plans and implements the chapter’s legislative program. Recruits and supports volunteer efforts in central and downstate Illinois, evaluates legislation, maintains government and political contacts, makes strategic recommendations.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plans, coordinates and implements the Chapter’s legislative strategies. Lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials.
  • Monitors, studies and researches proposed legislation to determine possible effects to the environment and makes appropriate recommendations. Confers with legislators and officials to emphasize weakness or merits of specific bills to influence passage, defeat, or amendment of measure, or introduction of legislation more favorable to the Club’s interests.  
  • Prepares and presents testimony at appropriate legislative hearings 
  • Coordinates with other individuals and organizations having similar positions in order to rally support for bills, initiatives, etc.
  • Supports the chapter grassroots lobby team. Trains, informs, and motivates volunteers and other chapter staff to enable them to activate others in efforts to influence legislative and regulatory decisions. Helps to coordinates meetings between Sierra Club members and elected officials to discuss legislative priorities.
  • Participates in the development of educational/ informational materials in regards to the Club’s legislative efforts to be shared with volunteers, elected officials, and the public. Prepares press releases and communicates with the media to state the Sierra Club’s view on specific legislation. 
  • Assists in the formulation of grassroots campaign and coalition activities in support of legislation at the local and state level. This includes but is not limited to online action alerts, rallies, phone banks, etc.
  • Monitors, and records voting patterns of elected officials regarding environmental legislation. Informs and educates the public as to the position taken by elected officials.
  • Maintains relationships with agency officials and advocates for chapter priories with relevant state and local agencies.
  • Supports Illinois conservation campaigns and volunteer efforts in central and downstate Illinois.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state and federal campaign and reporting requirements.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-2 years experience in the environmental field that includes working within the political process, press relations and public speaking.
  • Prior experience and effectiveness in lobbying.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A passion for service and a strong belief in the importance of grassroots organizing. A passion for and dedication to the Sierra Club mission.
  • A belief in the importance of bringing greater equity and inclusivity into the work we do.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteer leaders.
