Under the supervision of the Manager of Advocacy & Outreach, this position would be responsible for assisting with everyday tasks of the Springfield, Illinois Advocacy & Outreach team, which is responsible for AARP work in Springfield and across central and southern Illinois.  Advocacy work consists of state, federal and local public policy and government affairs efforts, and outreach work consists of helping the team deliver local community work mainly in, but not restricted to, Springfield, Peoria, and Alton.  This position will also comprise of a long term project which will leave a lasting impact and strengthen the work of AARP Illinois

Areas of Responsibility: 

Advocacy:

  • Work with advocacy staff and volunteers to achieve successful outcomes on key AARP initiatives during the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly;
  • Monitor, track and evaluate legislation introduced in the Illinois General Assembly; Manage the legislative tracking database;
  • Maintain a database compiling statistics and contacts related to advocacy issues;
  • Review media stories related to advocacy issues of interest to AARP’s key issues and compiling them for staff and volunteers;
  • Attend/monitor state legislative committee and session hearings as needed;
  • Attend and assist with press conferences, other communications work, and other legislative-related events;
  • Help organize and plan legislative breakfast or caucus meetings;
  • Work with AARP advocacy volunteers and help coordinate their activities;
  • Assist with federal and local advocacy issues as needed;
  • Assist with compiling information for the 2018 legislative voting record;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Outreach:

  • Assist AARP with livable communities work in Peoria, Springfield and Alton, including help planning community forums and doing research on these communities and their needs;
  • Help recruit, train and assist AARP volunteers to do the work necessary to accomplish our mission;
  • Assist staff planning multitude community events on a wide variety of topics including caregiving, technology, brain health, financial security, fraud, Movies for Grown Ups, etc.;
  • Serve as co-teacher/trainer during AARP events in coordination with a volunteer.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered a first or second year graduate student.
