A member of the Camp Eberhart Leadership Team, the purpose of the Program Director is to further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of program activities and events; design and deliver program activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities, and assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the Executive Camp Director.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Deliver safe, engaging and fun program to all campers and guests
- Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs
- Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.
- Hire, train, supervise and evaluate program instructors to develop and implement all facets of camp program activities
- Oversee the management and delivery of the year-round budget and summer camp supply budget
- Develop and implement schedules and records for all areas of camp program and facilities.
- Responsible for all posting/distributing schedules weekly. This includes coordinating with all directors and departments to ensure effective communication
- Responsible for overseeing the scheduling, organizing and execution year-round group contracts
- Ensure daily activities are well-run, staff are engaged with the campers/guests, activity areas are cleaned daily or hourly, activities are running on time and implementing the agreed upon activities
- Work with office administration and Executive Director to recruit and book new year-round groups
- Scheduling staff days off, ensuring activities and cabins maintain adequate coverage
- Should be constantly visiting each activity area (daily) and providing feedback, supervision and mentoring to the staff ensuring a smooth operation
- Meets with activity staff weekly to discuss and agree to the next week's schedule (arts and crafts projects, horseback riding trail days, field sports, etc.)
- Assisting cabin staff with issues they may be facing with campers or themselves
- Ensure each camper/guest is having a positive experience
- Manage any disciplinary issues facing campers or staff
- Meet with staff (weekly, bi weekly) to provide feedback and review staff performance, strengths and areas for improvement
- Attend administrative staff meetings
- Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise special events, all-camp activities and camp functions
- Provide ongoing program ideas to Executive Camp Director
- If needed, assist with evening Admin Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field or business administration
Skills/Experience:
- Experience in an administrative or supervisory role in a similar environment
- Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for similar population
- Able to perform physical aspects of the position, including:
Working long hours in an active camp program
Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
Respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid, and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers - Eligible for work in the United States
- Valid Driver’s License meets state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment
- Ability to pass a background check and provide other forms and details
- Ability to demonstrate excellent program management skills
- Personal values consistent with those of the YMCA
- Ability to develop, strengthen relationships and run camp programs for the YMCA of Michiana, Inc.
- Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical abilities to act swiftly in an emergency situation
- Knowledge of/practical experience in: cabin leadership, camper psychology, peer leadership and supervision; staff management & motivation
- First Aid and CPR Certifications preferred
- Strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, and creativity
- 3-5 years of camping experience, preferably in YMCA camping, with demonstrated growth specifically in summer camp and with experience in off summer season growth.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $29,000.00 - $45,000.00
