Camp Assistant

The Summer Camp Assistant will provide support to Audubon staff members responsible for the summer nature programs for children (ages 3-14) at the Sharon Audubon Center.  This position will be needed approximately eight weeks over the course of the summer, Monday through Friday, for 7-8 hours per day.  The Assistant will participate in and help with the games, crafts, lessons and activities with the children, as needed, and may be asked to prepare crafts such as running the photocopier or computer, cutting out projects, glueing, painting, etc. The Assistant will help ensure the safety of all campers at all times. Summer Camp Assistants also run the before and after-care portions of camp each week and oversee the care of all campers during those times. 

This position runs June 25 through August 17, 2018. Hours vary and rotate among all camp assistants in order to cover before and after-care. Examples of times are 7:45am-3:15pm, 8:45am-3:15pm and 9:00am-4:30pm. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist Audubon Summer Naturalists (Summer Interns) with setting up each day’s activities and cleaning up the activities at the end of each camp day
  • Help lead students on hikes around the Audubon grounds
  • Assist with crafts, games and all other activities relating to summer camp
  • Assist with maintaining the safety and comfort of all campers during their time at Audubon Camp
  • Engage in administrative or clerical duties, as assigned
  • Attend to summer camp after-care, as needed
  • Check-in campers who are attending before care and oversee all activities and safety of children during before-care hours (if assigned)
  • Check-out campers who are attending after-care and oversee all activities and safety of children during after-care hours (if assigned)
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ideal candidates must be least 16 years old, able to work well and interact with young children and adults, show respect for others, nature and the outdoors
  • Enthusiastic work attitude, pleasant, reliable, and able to carry out simple assigned tasks when asked
  • Must be able to work all 8 weeks over the summer, and have the ability to work in outdoor settings with varying conditions
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to/from work each day. No housing is included in this position.
