The National Audubon Society is excited to announce its second year of the Walker Communications Fellowship Program, designed for students (undergraduate or graduate) majoring in journalism, communications, or related fields. As a full-time fellow, s/he will be a valuable contributor on our Content, Journalism and Marketing teams, contributing primarily digital content while getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a communications professional at a major nonprofit. 

The general themes of these fellowships are:

  • How personal action leads to collective action;
  • Environmental justice and conservation;
  • Reaching new, broader, urban and more diverse audiences.

This fellowship is an initial step toward a long-term, successful career in journalism or communications. The Walker Communications Fellows will have the opportunity to be immersed in the world of journalism and communications, learning from experts in those fields. Fellows will also have the opportunity to create social media campaigns and to do multimedia storytelling across channels using text, interactive tools and world-class nature photography.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Walker Communications Fellows will have an opportunity to:

  • Create content for publication online and in print on topics relating to conservation and environmental justice.
  • Create compelling content through video or photos or other interactive multimedia tools in collaboration with the art department.
  • Master the craft of fact checking and copyediting.
  • Gather information by interviewing experts, interpreting scientific journals, and scouring various media outlets for stories that help educate the public about conservation and bird issues.
  • Learn to write quick but informed takes on the day's environmental news for the website, and participate in pushing this information out through social media. 
  • Attend and participate in weekly editorial meetings and/or marketing meetings.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned.

Curriculum:

  • Fellows will be required to attend a number of seminars and workshops, to further their learning. These will include Social Media in Journalism and Messaging, Digital Architecture, Using Digital Tools to Tell Stories, Energizing Supporters with News and Stories, to name a few.
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate and Graduate-level journalism, communications and marketing students
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ability to report and write stories on science-focused topics
  • Ability to generate multimedia content is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and in time-sensitive environments
  • A self-starter with a keen attention to detail; must be accurate, dependable, and able to consistently meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Interest in visual story telling
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required
  • Familiar with video-editing software preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish (reading and writing) is a plus
  • A consumer and user of today’s suite of social media platforms with a familiarity of and experience with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat,, YouTube, and other platforms.
  • Experience pinpointing story ideas, and promoting content through social media
  • Experience with content management systems is a plus
  • An interest in environmental issues, birds, and wildlife
  • Able to work independently and flexible
