Under the guidance and direction of Seward Park's Center Director Manager, the Summer Camp Co-Lead Counselor is responsible for delivering summer camp day programs in Seward Park, located in southeast Seattle. The Environmental Educator should be comfortable leading groups of children ages 6-11.

The summer camp counselor co-lead will share responsibilities in delivering our nature-theme summer camps. The Seward Audubon Center summer camps has a great reputation and has been very popular. As a result, many campers are either returning campers, or are siblings of previous campers. Two co-leads will administer the day-to-day camp operations for a group of 16 children. The Center is offering six weeks of camps for children ages 6-9. Nature education is the overall theme for our camps, but we have two specific programs: Wilderness Skills and Feathered Friends (birding). The camp curriculum and activities have been developed specifically for our camp, so co-leads are not required to develop new material. Our camp programs are completely outdoors and our location provides many opportunities for hikes and swimming.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Deliver in-class education programs and in park field trips
  • Ensure that students are supervised at all times
  • Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment
  • Resolve conflicts and student needs in caring and positive manner
  • Ensure participants are safe and operating in areas that are free of hazards
  • Set-up and clean-up of camp materials and equipment
  • Supervise campers and organize enrichment activities
  • Keep track of supplies and materials, and address needs that may arise
  • Do head-counts of participants throughout the day
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Environmental education experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Previous experience with outdoor education and/or leadership of groups of children ages 6-11
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental education and/or alternative education
  • Experience facilitating games, activities and creative arts
  • Confident public speaking and group management skills
  • Creative strategies for conflict resolution and problem solving
  • Experience in fields of natural science such as biology, geology, ecology and/or general knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecosystems
  • Experience in inquiry-based teaching techniques
  •  Ideal candidates will have an outgoing and energetic personality and loves being outdoors
  • Willing to work outdoors in varying terrains and weather conditions for extended periods of time with or without accommodation
  • Experienced swimmer
  • Adult and Child CPR/AED Certification
