Managing Editor

This job is no longer available

The Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) is a nonpartisan research center, located in Seattle, Washington, and led by investigators and collaborators at Arizona State University.

CRPE studies systemic change in K-12 public education through qualitative and quantitative research, then influences practice and policy through several means—including, notably, editorial products. Our ability to shape ideas and drive action in the field depends on the production of a wide variety of high-quality written products.

The Managing Editor will manage editorial processes, edit publications, and coach staff on a range of writing projects. The ideal candidate is an excellent editor and writer and an effective, highly organized project manager who can build effective systems and is a highly collaborative team member. They think critically and analytically, and adapt when priorities change. They develop content expertise quickly and have a researcher’s mindset, asking questions and proactively filling gaps in knowledge. They are comfortable adhering to the organization’s mission and balancing individual and institutional voices, while being unafraid to challenge thinking in productive ways. They can think creatively about how content could be adapted for multiple uses and audiences, then make it happen.

This individual must care deeply about the mission of CRPE and our commitment to producing actionable research and ideas that help dismantle systemic inequity and build a public education system that prepares every student for a life of citizenship and economic independence.

About CRPE

The Center on Reinventing Public Education believes inequities are hard-wired into our public education system in both obvious and subtle ways. Our core business is studying efforts to rewire the system for ongoing improvement, and excellence for every student—moving from the classroom, to the school, to policy implications. We envision a public education system that truly prepares every student for the challenges of the future. We fulfill this mission through:

  • Research: We produce world-class research that’s interesting, significant, and trustworthy.
  • Thought leadership: Our analysis looks around the corner, comments on relevant issues, and proposes new ideas.
  • Engagement with leaders: We prioritize learning from city, state, and nonprofit leaders in their communities and we inform their work with evidence.

Our Core Values

CRPE seeks team members who are passionate about systems change and embrace the idea that public education is a goal, not a set of institutions. The following core values guide our work:

  • Curiosity: We look around the corner
  • Excellence: We do world-class research that’s interesting, significant, and trustworthy
  • Teamwork: We’re clear, focused, and productive together
  • Ownership: We’re all responsible for CRPE’s success
  • Communication:  We’re clear and honest with each other
  • Camaraderie: We appreciate each other
  • Integrity: We’re professional and ethical
  • Equity: We are committed to an ongoing and active fight against racism and injustice

CRPE has played a national role in studying the impact of the COVID pandemic on school systems and policy, and we study new methods of schooling that will inform rebuilding efforts post-pandemic.

About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

The Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) is a research organization where transformative ideas are rigorously examined and tested, and research informs action. We are truth tellers who combine forward-thinking ideas with empirical rigor. Since 1993, we have been untethered to any one ideology but unwavering in a core belief: that public education is a goal—to prepare every child for citizenship, economic independence, and personal fulfillment—and not a particular set of institutions.

From that foundation, we work to understand what it will take for public education to meet the needs of every student, in order to inform meaningful changes in policy and practice.

Programs:

Our current research explores four broad topics:

Students and families: We work to understand what students and families need from their  education system.

Systems: We examine the inner workings of schools, districts, and state governments, delivering insights into how our education systems work to meet the needs of students, families, and communities.

Innovations: We identify promising initiatives outside the traditional education system that have the potential to radically improve teaching and learning.

Politics of change: We study the critical role of politics in determining whether school systems deliver on their promise, and explore the ways public officials, school system leaders, and change-makers can factor political thinking into their strategies for improving education.

By partnering with Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, a leader in designing the next education workforce, we are uniquely positioned to produce evidence and ideas that lead the country toward an education system that meets the needs of every student. Over the next five years, we aim to be the go-to source for defining a clear vision and high bar for successful post-pandemic recovery, tracking progress toward that vision, and testing bold ideas for students.
