The Finance Manager provides specialized services in accounting, financial management and reporting for The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Business Unit (~$15M annual operating budget, 70 staff).

Areas of Responsibility: 

A Senior Operations team member for the Washington Business Unit of The Nature Conservancy, the Finance Manager plays a lead role in providing finance, accounting and administrative services in support of conservation outcomes. Duties are highly confidential and require broad and comprehensive knowledge of The Nature Conservancy’s policies. Essential functions include:

Financial Management, Reporting & Analysis (40%)

  • General responsibility for the management, maintenance and reporting of all financial data.
  • Manage the full budget life cycle, which includes co-leading the development of the annual budget, mid-year forecasting and year-end closing.
  • Work with the leadership team to evaluate financial results and develop corrective strategies as needed.
  • Develop three- to five-year forecast models related to revenues and expenses.
  • Prepare regular financial reports for internal and external audiences (e.g. Board of Trustees, funders, TNC management at all operational levels).
  • Work with the Philanthropy team in managing and tracking Campaign activities, and work collaboratively to ensure that Philanthropy and Finance are closely aligned in their work flows and projects.
  • Monitor and maintain all financial information and conduct financial analysis.
  • May provide financial management and reporting support for cross-boundary projects and/or other business units as assigned.

Compliance (25%)

  • Monitor accounting and management controls and processes to ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, and financial/management best practices.
  • Serve as finance and compliance lead for the Central Cascades Forest LLC, a significant business interest of TNC, including ensuring timely and accurate financial and tax reporting and compliance for the LLC and other external accounts.

General Finance/Accounting and Operations (35%)

  • Supervise and support 1-3 finance and administrative staff.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Washington business unit and Worldwide Office.
  • Expert user of TNC’s financial management system (Insight, a product from UNIT4 Agresso).
  • Provide financial assistance to staff and responds to complex staff/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of finances and budgets.
  • Oversee and/or directly perform general accounting duties, including: basic journal entries for transfers, loans, land transactions, accruals, deferred revenue and expense corrections.
  • Oversee the Accounts Payable process (including related business processes).
  • Oversee preparation of state and local tax and other filings, insurance allocations and other centralized reporting functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

Level of Position: The Finance Manager is a senior member of the Operations team for the Washington Business Unit, with broad financial and compliance responsibility. They report to the Deputy State Director.

  • Supervise one or more administrative or professional staff, including training and professional development.
  • Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.

Within the scope of the position, the Finance Manager will:

  • Work toward meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating tactics for approved plans and completing and/or overseeing day-to-day tasks.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Reinforce consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.
  • Coordinate projects.
  • Resolve complex issues independently within program area and act as a resource to others to solve problems.
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 4 years' related experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
  • Experience with GAAP and accounting principles, practices and regulations.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MBA, or professional certification as a CPA or CIA, or a candidate for same.
  • Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Non-profit accounting experience, including experience working with private and government grants.
  • Experience recruiting, supervising and developing staff.
  • Technical expert on complex accounting/financial issues.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel. Data visualization expertise a plus.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Experience monitoring for and ensuring compliance with organizational policy, applicable law and regulation, and finance/accounting/management best practice.
  • Excellent communication skills including presentation, conversation and written. Experience explaining business financials to a non-financial audience.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of current trends in specific field.
  • Experience, coursework or other training with government regulations related to grants and/or contracts, including applicable U.S. Federal government circulars (OMB Circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133), state/local regulations, and standard contract clauses

Work Environment and Schedule

  • Work is generally performed in a professional office environment and involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Willingness to travel within Washington State and occasionally to meetings in other U.S. locations.
  • Work long and/or flexible hours as needed.
