POSITION OVERVIEW

The Cascade Bicycle Club seeks an energetic, strategic, and experienced organizer to recruit, train, mobilize, and steward Cascade’s diverse community of volunteer activists. We seek someone with interpersonal skills that help volunteers feel respected and appreciated as well as an understanding of the power of contact data management in community engagement. The Community Organizer leads outreach and engagement activities to further the statewide advocacy efforts for Cascade Bicycle Club, a 501(c)(3) and Washington Bikes, a (501)(c)(4). The Community Organizer will join as a member of the Policy Team and reports to the Policy Director.

 

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Policy Team advocates for policy that improves lives through bicycling. We make biking safer and more accessible to everyone. Cascade/WA Bikes works in Seattle, Bellevue, and in East King County as well as in communities around the state. We partner and advocate with agencies such as the City of Seattle and SDOT, King County and the Eastside Rail Corridor (now Eastrail), regional bodies like Sound Transit and PCRC, as well as the legislature in Olympia and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), specifically in Active Transportation. Current priorities include advocating for funding that connects communities with high quality bikeways and regional trails. Through WA Bikes exclusively, we work to elect bike-friendly leaders through c4 election activities, PAC fundraising and distribution, and endorsements.

 

The Community Organizer will engage with a wide range of stakeholders and volunteer advocates to support the Policy Team’s advocacy efforts. The individual should be skilled in community organizing, data management and online outreach tools, and apply their skills to support policy objectives in the areas we serve. The position will utilize contact relationship management (CRM) systems to strengthened Cascade’s volunteer pipeline and move people towards more powerful advocacy. They will continually engage top volunteers to give them tools and opportunities to make an impact.

Areas of Responsibility: 

CASCADE (c3) CORE RESPONSIBILITIES (70%)

 

  • Recruit and organize a large number of diverse volunteer advocates.
    • Write recruitment and engagement-oriented blog posts & emails.
    • Amplify recruiting through social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
    • Cultivate, maintain and grow grassroots relationships.
       
  • Train volunteers through programs and events.
    • Lead engagement-oriented trainings.
    • Help develop messaging and speaking points.
    • Run the Advocacy Leadership Institute (ALI) training program.
    • Develop materials to help advocates work in their own neighborhood.
       
  • Mobilize advocates as needed.
    • Respond to organizing requests for public meetings in support of improved bike infrastructure and safer streets.
    • Assist with trail and bikeway openings and events.
    • Grant fulfillment with Washington State Department of Transportation to engage volunteers with the annual One-day Bike Count.
    • Manage Salesforce Database to create relevant lists to engage people through Mailchimp and Phone2Action.
       
  • Steward volunteers to keep a large and active body of committed advocates.
    • Communicate regularly with star volunteers.
    • Engage Policy Committee members and former ALI graduates.
    • Plan quarterly community events for volunteer recognition.

 

WASHINGTON BIKES (c4) CORE RESPONSIBILITIES (30%)

  • Work with State Policy Director in electoral work and endorsements.
  • Support targeted field campaigns, lobby days, and community fundraising events.
  • Coordinate the Washington Bikes Around the State e-newsletter once a month.
  • Assist in online promotions and fundraising for the Washington Bike PAC.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least two years campaign or community organizing experience.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build and manage many relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Clear understanding of the power of clean lists and a well-managed database.
  • Experience with social media, email outreach, and phone-banking.
  • Ability to manage projects with many stakeholders.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working at an advocacy-oriented organization or in an advocacy-oriented position.
  • Experience with Salesforce or another campaign contact relationship management (CRM) database.
  • Strong promotional writing and campaign communications skills.
  • Knowledge of local and state transportation, transit, bikes, and trail related issues.
  • Understanding of safe systems theory and Vision Zero objectives.
  • Experience supporting racial, health, mobility, and/or environmental equity and justice programs and outcomes.

 

 

SALARY RANGE
$46,000-$58,000 annually. This is a full-time, exempt position. Due to the large-scale nature of events and their importance to the fiscal well being of Cascade and WA Bikes, staff members are required to work several events a year, a mix of mandatory all-hands events and choice events. This position may also require some evening and weekend work.

Employment at Cascade is of an At-Will nature. Staffing and support for Washington Bikes is governed by an Administrative Services Agreement between the c3 and c4. Approximately 70% of this job is responsible to Cascade (c3) and 30% is responsible to Washington Bikes (c4).
