Chief Programs Officer

This job is no longer available

Seattle, WA, USA
Full-time

At Code.org, our vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer science. To support that vision, our educational programs team builds deep partnerships, professional development programs, curricula, and resources to enable schools to implement high quality, equitable K-12 computer science pathways. Code.org is looking for a Chief Programs Officer to take on the critical role of managing and developing our educational programs.

To scale to tens of thousands of schools and support local needs, the Education Programs team focuses on capacity building for local organizations, facilitators, administrators, and teachers. To prepare teachers, the team designs professional learning programs and develops hundreds of facilitators and over 60 regional partners to run these programs. To support teachers each day in their classroom, this team built and continues to develop and evolve a K-12 curriculum pathway that provides lesson plans, resources, pedagogy and best practices for teachers new to computer science. To encourage schools and districts to expand their offerings, the team supports our Regional Partners in building local outreach efforts and developing communities.

Areas of Responsibility:

As Chief Programs Officer, you will be responsible for strategic program development, team and program management, curriculum development and partnerships. You will partner closely with our engineering, product, marketing and policy teams and drive our educational direction for the organization and leadership team.

The CPO manages a large internal team — responsible for hundreds of part-time facilitators, more than 60 regional partners, engaging tens of thousands of teachers with in person professional learning programs, and ultimately reaching over a million teachers with accounts on Code.org.

As CPO, you will:

  • Manage the vision and direction of our full K-12 curriculum and professional learning pathway.
  • Actively lead and manage a team of 25-plus, ensuring that team members have the skills, resources, and support needed to work to the best of their abilities.
  • Support the team to identify and incorporate best practices around equity and pedagogy into our resources.
  • Manage and support a network of regional partners across the country as well as working with other curriculum and PD partners.
  • Run programs to support facilitator development and engage our growing community of over 600 facilitators across the country
  • Prioritize and align workflows with our product, engineering, marketing and policy teams.
  • Support the workload, growth, and professional development of the team.
  • Manage an annual budget for all our educational work and local partnerships.

In addition to program responsibilities, the CPO serves as an organizational leader and thought partner to the President and Founder, working in collaboration to identify and solve business problems, increase impact, and ensure that Code.org is advancing its mission: ensuring that every student in school has the opportunity to learn computer science.

Skills/Experience:

Our ideal candidate has experience working in education, possesses strong leadership, writing, and communication skills; effectively prioritizes projects and supports their team; and can develop strong collaborative relationships with other CS education providers and organizations. They will also have a demonstrated commitment to Code.org’s mission and vision.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Managed and developed large teams across multiple roles/functions and levels of experience;
  • Experience creating, negotiating and managing complex partnerships with other organizations;
  • Driven changes at scale for curriculum/pedagogy across districts/schools;
  • Held a leadership role driving strategy;
  • An understanding of and passion for equity in K-12 education and computer science;
  • Managed the design and evaluation of multi-site educational programs.

The strongest candidates will also offer some combination of the following:

  • Knowledge of computer science, including the concepts covered in the K-12 CS Framework and introductory college level CS courses;
  • Working knowledge of best practices in pedagogy and equitable curriculum design (ideally in a STEM field);
  • Exposure to the CSTA Computer Science Standards, CS Principles Framework, state CS standards and/or K-12 CS Framework;
  • K-12 teaching experience and/or K-12 administrator experience;
  • Facilitation experience and/or professional learning design;
  • Public speaking experience and skills;
  • Strong existing connections to the computer science education community;
  • Familiarity with Code.org’s curriculum and platform offerings.

This job requires flexibility to travel 25% of your working time per year (conferences, meeting partners, etc.)
