Aquatics Supervisor, Swim Instructor

Supervises branch Swim Instructors and creates class schedules, staffing schedules, and hiring, onboarding, and training of new staff.  Maintains safe conditions for swim lesson participants and creates a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides leadership and support to branch Swim Instructors including conducting effective onboarding and training for new employees.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff and volunteers. Conducts staff meetings and organizes trainings.
  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
  • Work with Lifeguards to maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules, and maintaining emergency readiness.
  • Develops positive relationships with participants and parents encouraging involvement and identifying potential volunteers.
  • Assists with pool administration including the creation of the pool/Swim Instructor schedule.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as required. Leads meetings as required.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Responds to emergency situations as needed and completes incident and accident reports.
  • Organizes class equipment and reports damaged equipment immediately.
  • Conveys basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and refers members to other YMCA Total Health programs and/or staff as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Current state approved First-Aid Certification*
  • Current state approved community CPR Certification, or equivalent*
  • YMCA Swim Leader certification or equivalent**
  • The ability to obtain or currently holds Y Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer Certification or equivalent within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist children and others in the development of swimming skills
  • Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average size child
  • * Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.
  • **Within six months of employment or at first available training.

PREFERRED POSITION ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS

  • Two to three years of directly related experience with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
