The SMD, Chief of Staff will manage all internal operations of the region, supervising the development, alumni affairs, and program continuum functions. You will serve as a chief consultant to the Executive Director and ensure world-class strategy, operations, and culture for our region. The Chief of Staff must be an energetic, emotionally-connected self-starter who shares the Executive Director’s commitment to Teach For America’s core mission. The Chief of Staff should be a skilled conceptual thinker, with the ability to assess the collateral impact of decisions and actions. You will have excellent analytical skills and be able to develop appropriate metrics to measure outcomes across all functional teams. In addition, you should be adept at communicating those outcomes to stakeholders and an active participant in the discussion of program effectiveness to achieve desired results. You will handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, balancing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands. You must also have the demonstrated ability to deal with confidential information and act as a liaison between the Executive Director and other constituencies, both internal and external. You must exhibit the skills to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships, and the capability to interact within all levels inside and outside of Teach For America - Washington. The ideal candidate will be an effective strategic thinker, problem solver, planner, and driver of change who operates with a sense of urgency and personal responsibility. You will be as comfortable at 30,000 feet as you are on the ground. The Chief of Staff must communicate in a transparent and honest fashion that promotes inclusiveness, cooperation, and teamwork. In addition, you will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment, as well as a sense of humor and humility.
- Shepherd our organizational strategy by refining the regional strategic plan
- Coach and develop your four direct reports across the development, program, and alumni functions, driving them – and their teams – to thrive individually and collectively
- Manage external communications and relationships to align our constituents around our vision and increase investment and transparency in our work, including managing our Board of Directors
- Lead internal communications and conduct formal and informal assessments of team culture to ensure TFA-Washington is a great place to work
- Oversee the office of the Executive Director’s operations to ensure the Executive Director is spending time on the highest-leverage opportunities
- Represent the region in both internal and external settings, including events and conferences

- 5+ years of experience leading teams with a clear record of impressive results and demonstrating progressively increasing responsibility

Work Demands
