Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Healthy Living Director is accountable for the operational oversight and management of all Health and Wellness programs and initiatives, supervision of department staff, and budget. The candidate’s key function is to build strong lasting relationships with members and employees that will build healthy lifestyles. The Healthy Living Director will provide premiere membership experience, value, service, membership retention, and vibrant engagement programs by planning, budgeting, promoting, and implementing YMCA Healthy Living Programs. 

The Healthy Living Director is also responsible for enhancing member relations and retention by developing innovative wellness programming, maintaining proactive communication with staff and members related to programs and schedules and working with our building and operations team to ensure a clean, safe, welcoming environment.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages all aspects of the sub-departments of the Healthy Living Department, including:  Fitness, Group Exercise, Personal Training, Field House operations, evidence based YMCA Chronic Disease Prevention programs, Youth Sports Programs, and Membership retention/engagement.
  • Ensures equipment safety, quality programming, develop engaging and effective membership challenges/activities, effective scheduling, appropriate staffing ratios, completion of required training, and adherence to YMCA member code of conduct and policy.
  • Plan and manage the Wellness budget. Control payroll and department purchasing costs within the budget and financial guidelines. 
  • Must be positive with energetic personality and have passion for healthy living.
  • Effectively manage departmental budget by effectively managing daily operations, driving revenue, and monitoring expenses.  Must be able to work flexible schedule and be present throughout the week for peak group exercise classes, which also includes Saturday mornings.
  • Create and implement wellness and lifestyle programs, personal training and group exercise participation through product knowledge and interactions with existing and potential members. Collaborate with department leads to maximize enrollments in program registration. Direct staff to support health and wellness initiatives to achieve retention goals.
  • Ensure proper implementation of wellness floor schedules and procedures to provide maximum opportunities for member/staff connections. Collaborate and work effectively with all departments to achieve desired results.
  • Identify and employ best practices in systems and technology to support effective management of the Wellness department. Utilize available technology, reporting tools and data that enhance wellness participation and member retention.
  • Excellent communication, time management & organizational skills.
  • Experience in personnel supervision, recruitment, training, and development of staff and volunteers.
  • Develop, coordinate, manage and expand the weekly group exercise class schedule.
  • Recruit, hire, train new staff and evaluate qualified high-energy instructors to effectively operate programs of the department as budgeted and approved.
  • Maintain accurate records current staff certifications.
  • Monitor and track data for class usage, attendance, participation, performance data, appointments, etc. and analyzes data for needed changes.  Implements and oversees program evaluation to guarantee faithfulness to YMCA purpose, high quality and maintenance of YMCA standards.
  • Complete payroll and employment forms for new hires, changes, terminations etc. accurately and timely.
  • Enable proactive, clear, effective and timely internal communications tools to ensure a positive and consistent member experience.  Identify, collect and interpret data so that it enables informed decision making and ensures the achievement of key performance indicators.
  • Represents and participates in YMCA community outreach and sales efforts using strategies driven by the Golden Corridor Family YMCA mission.
  • Advises the Executive Director to ensure operational growth of membership recruitment and retention, and retention, and pricing strategies.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations within the service area in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Analyze data, systems and processes to recognize growth, retention, continuous improvement opportunities within the Wellness department.
  • Assists in and attends major YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Recreation Management, or Health and Wellness with previous experience in managing fitness departments, equipment, budget, and staff.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Current national (YMCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM, or AFAA) personal training and group exercise certification (must be available to substitute as needed), and YMCA Evidence Based Health Initiatives certifications.
  • Proven track record in program development and marketing, implementing new health initiatives, leading, motivating, and inspiring others in successfully achieving their health and wellness goals.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic backgrounds.
  • Creative ability to implement innovative health and fitness programming relevant to current community needs.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $42,000.00 - $45,000.00
