The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 100,000 veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director, Programs and Operations to join the team of AVMA’s charitable arm – the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). 

Established in 1963 and headquartered in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago, the AVMF is a thriving Foundation dedicated to increasing charitable resources for the support of the veterinary profession and those that love and care for animals and has strategically positioned itself as a national charitable resource and priority for the support of the veterinary profession, veterinary students, and the care of animals.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director, Programs and Operations oversees the creation, implementation, and evaluation of AVMF programs and assists with the operations of the Foundation. Responsibilities include working with staff, governance entities and volunteers to oversee and manage programs including various AVMF grant and scholarship programs. Operations responsibilities include overseeing financial reporting, day to day operations of the Foundation, assisting with changes to the AVMF websites, support of AVMF governance entities and management of AVMF’s research grant process. They will work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other staff and will assist in soliciting support of AVMF programs as needed.

Educational Background: 
BS/BA degree
Skills/Experience: 

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMF’s mission, additional qualifications include:

  • BS/BA degree required, with a minimum of five years of experience in program management and grants administration in a nonprofit environment including supervisory experience.
  • Foundation experience with a national nonprofit association highly preferred.
  • Related experience in higher education/College of Veterinary Medicine preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including social media facilitation.
  • High degree of professionalism and code of ethical standards.
  • Must be flexible and open to the culture of organizational change and tackling new opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience working with budgets and financial reporting.
  • Significant experience developing plans relating to program development and execution.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities, high energy, and "can-do" attitude.
  • Ability to work with and effectively communicate with diverse individuals and to work across and in support of different and varied operations, including scientific and non-scientific communities.
  • Advanced project management skills required.
  • High attention to detail, strong process orientation, demonstrated capability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all departments and employees in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must exhibit AVMA’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the execution of duties.
  • Approximately 5% travel
