The Director of Outdoor Programs will have a proven track record of connecting youth and their families to innovative, engaging, and fiscally-sound outdoor programs during both the school year and summer.
Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director, they will oversee the development, implementation, organization and direction of YMCA Point Bonita’s outdoor programs, including outdoor environmental education, day camp, residential summer and family camps, and community wellness programs. They are responsible for: the recruitment, supervision and coaching of a staff team that reflect the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of the communities served and the YMCA of San Francisco’s focus on diversity, inclusion and global engagement; developing and stewarding partnerships with new and existing community partners, such as school districts, National Park Service, funders, teachers, YMCA branches and programmatic partners; and regularly evaluating programs, participant/staff satisfaction, and fiscal benchmarks to implement programmatic changes in response to this feedback. Responsibility for creating, monitoring and ensuring compliance with fiscal targets, grant requirements, and enrollment benchmarks is of upmost importance in this position.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, coach and evaluate all outdoor program staff and volunteers, including program coordinators, naturalists, day and residential/family camp counselors, and program volunteers
- Develop and implement quality outdoor education, camp and community wellness programs, including designing curriculum and teaching materials that meet stated educational standards for use in outdoor education and camp programs
- Create, implement and monitor department budgets. Complete variance reports and research discrepancies as needed, as well as formulating contingency plans as needed.
- Coordinate the outreach and stewardship strategies required to meet or exceed enrollment benchmarks
- Ensure all training and certifications up to date for all assigned staff and volunteers.
- Ensure compliance with all department, branch and association safety policies and procedures for assigned staff and programs, including first aid response and child safety
- Conduct program evaluations and oversee program changes in response to community needs and interests.
- Steward and develop relationships with new and existing programmatic partners
- Identify/Remove barriers to inclusion wherever possible, ensuring program activities are welcoming and accessible and staff are reflective of the communities served
- Develop and assist with writing grant proposals and reports
- Perform director-on-duty responsibilities as assigned
- Minimum of 21 years of age.
- 2 or more years experience directly supervising outdoor programming (including staff supervision and curriculum, program and budget development)
- Experience working with youth, teens, and adults, including a minimum of two years direct programming experience in Outdoor/Environmental Education and/or Resident Camp
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent customer service and organizational skills with the ability to move multiple projects forward simultaneously
- Proficiency with Outlook, Excel and Word
PREFERRED
- A master’s degree in recreation, natural sciences, education or a related field
- Track record of successful grant-writing and donor relations
- Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification
- (Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED certifications required within 30 days of hire)
- Bilingual Spanish language skills
Salary: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00
