Context: The Chapter Director implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee. Manages the staff budget and operations of more than one of the following operational areas: conservation program, fundraising, volunteer development and member services.
Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. Responsible for managing staff and financial resources for the assigned areas. This position is part-time for the duration of 6 months, with the potential of being extended, depending on funding.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assists the Executive Committee, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
- Designs and develops information systems to monitor the effectiveness of programs, as well as the status of the budget. Responsible for reporting outcomes to the chapter Executive Committee.
- Establishes protocols and routine for recruiting, activating and retaining volunteers at the chapter and group levels. Identifies chapter needs and recruits volunteers to fill them. Trains and oversees volunteer outreach coordinators for chapter and groups. .
- Identifies areas where the membership can be grown and utilized to participate in campaigns. Trains and oversees membership coordinators at the chapter and group level who can welcome and be the points of contact for new members and provide assistance for navigating the Sierra Club.
- Works with the Chapter Treasurer and chapter and group volunteers on fundraising strategy and events. Works with communications staff to bring fundraising components to events and outreach efforts. Trains volunteers in fundraising skills.
- Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events. Builds strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
- Coordinates efforts with the national and Sierra Club California staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national and state requirements.
- Manages staff in assigned operational or program areas. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate. Ensures Chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
- Reviews staff time report and ensures the reporting of this information in WorkDay is accurate and timely in accordance with Sierra Club policies.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Chapter Chair or designee.
Educational Background:
B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.
Skills/Experience:
- At least 3 years= experience in grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers, coalition building and lobbying.
- Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking ability.
- Excellent knowledge and background in environmental issue areas.
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
- Nonprofit administration experience very desirable.
