Under the supervision of the Director, Membership Engagement and Healthy Living, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the Santa Monica Family YMCA, the Wellness Coordinator will be responsible for operations of the Healthy Living programs including but not limited to supervising all aspects of the adult group exercise program, supervising and development of staff and volunteers, and overseeing the operation of all health and wellness programs: Adult Fitness, Youth/Teen Fitness, Group Exercise, Special Events, Specialty Classes and Programs.

AREAS OF PERFORMANCE:

Program Planning, Development & Management:

  • Assure that the health and fitness program offerings meet YMCA goals and objectives.
  • Create and maintain an energizing, fun, safe and educational group exercise program.
  • Monitor group class schedule for maximum participation; immediately update and communicate schedule changes.
  • Instruct a minimum of 4 varied group classes per week (indoor cycling, body sculpting, etc.), and substitute teach as needed to avoid class cancellation.
  • Assure classes begin and end on time, keep attendance records and class rosters, evaluate program thoroughly and periodically.
  • Deliver quality, effective Wellness Center programming including, but not limited to, New Member Orientations, Fit Well coaching programs, body composition analysis and personal training.
  • Supervise wellness center staff.  Develop and implement staffing plans to ensure a high quality member experience with no lapse in coverage.  Provide Wellness Center floor coverage when necessary.
  • Create a safe and welcoming environment in the Wellness Center by assisting members to help them achieve their healthy lifestyle goals.
  • Ensure a culture of committed relationships and engagement is developed, resulting in increased participation by members, community participants and volunteers, especially in group fitness. 
  • Be visible and accessible to members at all times and respond immediately to member concerns.
  • Prepare the monthly statistical, analytical and narrative reports regarding the results and effectiveness of fitness programs and group exercise classes.

Staff Leadership:

  • Recruit, orient, train, and supervise all staff and volunteers for all program areas of responsibility according to Y policies.
  • Develop written job descriptions for all staff and volunteers.
  • Annually review and evaluate staff/volunteer performance.
  • Schedule regular meetings and trainings with cause-driven strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Assure staff act in a professional manner including showing up on time for their scheduled shifts, dressed properly and follow through on their assignments.
  • Consistently address poor performance with proper documentation and coaching, as well as recognize excellent performance.
  • Ensure proper implementation of department procedures. Review and update procedures as needed and communicate changes to staff. 

Safety and Risk Management:

  • Assure fitness equipment and facilities are maintained and are in clean, safe condition and available for members.
  • Assure all staff maintains current required certifications and safety trainings.
  • Train staff on proper documentation of incidents. 
  • Complete incident report forms within 24 hours and submit to Director, Member Engagement and Healthy Living. 
  • Keep documented inventory of all equipment and supplies.
  • Properly store equipment and keep in good condition.  Assure safekeeping and maintenance of sound systems.
  • Immediately request and oversee needed equipment repairs or necessary replacements.  Document all purchases and major repairs. 
  • Regularly wipe down cardio and weight equipment, replace wipes, and discard litter.
  • Observe locker room conditions and report any needed cleaning or repairs immediately.

Fiscal Management:

  • Participate in the planning of the annual departmental budget; manage and implement the approved budget, and take appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Submit a written request and receive authorization for purchase prior to ordering.

Volunteer Development:

  • Develop volunteer capacity. Supervise and recognize volunteer staff.

Community Involvement and Promotion:

  • Attend YMCA membership fitness events and represent the YMCA at community events to promote YMCA wellness programs.
  • Develop, promote and evaluate marketing materials for all wellness program offerings and services according to YMCA national branding guidelines.
  • Market and promote classes and programs aggressively.  Keep brochures current, accurate and available.  Monitor program content on Website for accuracy and request updates as needed.
Skills/Experience: 
  • This position requires one to be physically fit and capable of teaching and demonstrating group exercise and fitness activities.  
  • This position also requires one to be energetic, enthusiastic and able to work a flexible schedule as needed.  
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines is necessary.  
  • Must have the ability to work with, and support, health seekers in achieving healthier lifestyles.  
  • Management skills in staff/volunteer recruitment, training, supervision, and knowledge of program planning, and promotion are required.  
  • Must be personable and have good written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Must demonstrate professional conduct and be team player-oriented.
