PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the CDO, the Grant Writer will be responsible for researching, creating and writing grant proposals to fund the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Clubs’ initiatives and programs. The Grant Writer is responsible for handling all aspects of developing successful grant proposals, coordinating input across the organization as needed and responsible for all post reporting associated with funded grants.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

  • Conduct full range of activities required to prepare, write and submit grant proposals in accordance with the fundraising budgetary goals of the organization
  • Follow-up on grant approvals and denials
  • Responsible for reports to funders as needed outlining use of funds and outcomes of programs funded in a timely fashion
  • Follow-up on informational requests from funders
  • Identify prospective foundation, corporate and government funders
  • Maintain ongoing communication with foundations and government agencies
  • Maintain current grant & contract records in database, including grant tracking and reporting
  • Coordinates research on potential grant funders and seeks to determine where potential donor interests align with needs and opportunities of the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Clubs
  • Establish a system for tracking any reporting required by the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Clubs to foundations

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Attends staff meetings
  2. Participates in cross-departmental teams and assumes the responsibilities agreed upon
  3. Occasional travel to branch sites for collaboration
  4. Assume other duties as assigned

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal:  Maintain close, daily, contact with Club staff (professional/volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.

External:  Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member’s parent and other to assist in resolving problems or issues.       

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Grant writing skills
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Strong editing skills
  • Strong attention to detail required
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize, self-motivate, think creatively, and be adaptable
  • Ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision
  • Flexibility to assume a workload that frequently necessitates an adjustment of priorities
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and collaborative with staff in other divisions and departments
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with diverse staff, members, donors, Board Members, Volunteers, consultants and funders
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in related fields from an accredited college or university
  • Preferred BA in English, Writing, Communications or related field
  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations preferred
  • Two to three years of grants research and writing experience
