This position is responsible for supervision and care of children in the Infant & Toddler program and aiding the team of teachers in general supervision and management of a class of toddler aged children. Provides direction for the program and classroom, assists in planning and implements age appropriate program curriculum. This position is also responsible for helping recordkeeping, inventory of supplies in the classroom and any safety issues. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that is in accordance with the associstion’s policies and procedures that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Implements curriculum within the established guidelines.
  • Implements daily lesson/activity plans for the classroom.
  • Supervises the children and non-lead teachers, classroom, and all activities.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Participates in parent conferencesn when necessary, and maintains positive relationships and effective communication with parents. 
  • Maintains program site and equipment.
  • Maintains required program records.
  • Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
  • Promote, establish and maintain a positive YMCA image at all times.
  • Dress in an appropriate and professional manner following YMCA rules and guidelines.
  • Follow YMCA work rules and procedures to complete all assigned tasks and duties in an efficient, timely and positive manner at all times.
  • Employee is to model non-sexist and non-racist behavior towards children parents or staff.
  • Employee must take initiative to be willing to assume additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Employee must be cooperative, accessible and an active member of the YMCA staff.
  • Follow all YMCA, Child Development Department, and State Licensing policies and procedures at all times.
  • Maintain State Licensing and staff/child ratios requirements at all times.
  • Helps orient new parents and children to the program, assist with tours as needed.
  • Address parent concerns and comments in a timely and professional manner; keep the Child Development Director informed of all parent concerns and issues.
Educational Background: 
A minimum of 12 ECE units from an accredited college and a commitment to continue education to obtain a BA in ECE or a related field (AA minimum for associate teachers) 
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Up-to-date TB test every 2 years. If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required.
  • Must have a current Live scan active on file.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Infant and toddler teachers are required to have completed an infant and toddler class from an accredited college with a “C” grade or better.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position is not considered light duty.  Employee must be able to lift 40 pounds; be able stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and be in good physical health.   
  • Employee must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to safely withstand exposure to the elements which include sun, wind, and any weather while on duty. 
  • Must be able to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings. 
  • Ability to see at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds.
  • Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular basis.
