NRDC is seeking a Development Assistant to work the Development group in our Santa Monica office.  The Development Assistant provides administrative and research support to the members of the Southern California Major Gifts Development team, with additional support, as assigned, to the Special Projects team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide administrative support to the Southern California Development Director and the Development Manager for the regional donor group – the NRDC Los Angeles Leadership Council. Actively participate in all meetings and advocacy trips.
  • Assist the Director of Development and team with preparatory work for all meetings and events for LA development staff and senior leadership staff. This will entail the creation of call memos and trip briefings for major gift donors and the personalization of thank you notes from senior leadership to major gift donors, requiring significant time spent performing donor research.
  • Help prepare individual and bulk mailings to major gifts, family foundations, and gift planning members, as well as for events.
  • Track RSVPs and attendance lists for events.
  • Maintain paper and electronic filing systems for development materials.
  • Data entry and development database maintenance.
  • Organize meetings and conference calls between senior LA Development staff, and internal and external colleagues.
  • Handle travel arrangements and prepare expense reports, billing, check requests and vendor relations for the LA Development team managers and directors.
  • Assist in coordinating other event logistics, including catering, audio visual needs, maintaining event timeline and helping to secure product donations.
  • Help manage staff/volunteers for day of an event
  • Research prospective donors, their foundations, and other projects.
  • Proofread, editing, and word processing of development documents, reports, etc.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail and phone calls for development.
  • Order and restock publications, printed materials, branded collateral, etc.
  • Assist in managing development interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor of Arts or Science degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of three years full-time experience in a development support position, (event planning, development, non-profit or entertainment industry experience a plus).
  • Superior ability to perform undirected work with meticulous attention to accuracy/detail, including excellent proofreading skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, must be comfortable in speaking with NRDC members and high-profile individuals.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks requiring rapid turnaround and to follow institutional procedures.
  • Ability to maintain professional image and composure under stress and to adhere to high standards of confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must possess a high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with spreadsheets and databases required. Salesforce knowledge or aptitude for learning the software utilized by NRDC.
