Under the supervision of the Executive Director, this position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Oversees assigned areas of a YMCA branch, which include Aquatics, Health and Wellness, Childcare, Camps, Youth and Community Programs. Participates in volunteer and staff development, financial development, community relations and collaborations with community agencies.

Bachelor's degree in human services, recreation, business or a related field, or equivalent, preferred.

2. Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.

3. Ability to direct assigned operations including volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, and program development.

4. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations

5. Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.

6. YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team/Branch Leader certification preferred.

7. CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard certifications may be required.

Areas of Responsibility: 

To perform satisfactorily, the Associate Executive Director shall:

  • Develop and direct high quality member engagement strategies and programs which support branch and Association goals, and strategies. May direct branch marketing and communication efforts.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop and direct employees and volunteers. Honestly review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff to achieve goals by cultivating trust in others through direct and honest interactions
  • Develop, manage, and monitor assigned operating budgets to meet or exceed targets. Recommend adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation and submits reports on current operations.
  • Establish plans for the expansion of programs and services that complement the branch strategic plan and overall YMCA objectives.
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
  • Assume a leadership role for Annual Campaign and all assigned branch committees.  
  • Ensure the maintenance of facilities and properties of the branch to assure high standards of maintenance, safety, cleanliness and to assure that the requirements of regulatory codes are fully met.
  • Serve as a member of YMCA management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Program, Planning and Development:

  • Oversee select program budgets from concept to creation as well as ongoing management of budgets and adjusting as necessary. 
  • Ensures recruitment, orientations and training for all volunteers and staff related to program areas is completed.
  • Ensure bi-annual evaluations of programs to determine if program vehicle is viable
  • Ensure programs are run in accordance all YMCA policies and any city, county or state regulations. 
  • Recommend program model changes, additions, redesigns, etc. to the Executive Director
  • Provide leadership to ensure safe programming and a priority of creating new programs and adapting current programs to meet the needs of the members and community.
  • Continuously monitor program progress and satisfaction by using surveys and other member satisfaction measures to ensure that member needs and concerns are being met.
  • Ensure that professional quality program guides are completed quarterly and on time.
  • Assist Executive Director in organizing and developing systems and new services to ensure continuous growth and development. 
  • Work with program directors to uncover/develop new program opportunities based upon community needs.
  • Ensure successful management and supervision of staff through proper adherence to policies and procedures set forth by the Channel Islands YMCA.
  • Support Program Directors in their role as staff liaison to their Committees.
  • Serve as branch marketing liaison.
  • Understand all Active configurations and provide trainings/support as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain written position descriptions and performance standards for all direct reports.
  • Ensure that staff receives semi and/or annual performance evaluations. 
  • Champion the development and implementation of a branch staff recognition program.
  • Ensure that staff have appropriate safety and program certifications.
  • Support Executive Director in any capital development projects.
  • Promptly and courteously handle member feedback by taking responsibility to resolve the issue directly or by referring it to an appropriate director, and take responsibility to see that all concerns are responded to within 24 hours.

Branch Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Participates and accepts leadership in staff meetings.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty as assigned by supervisor.
  • Serve as member of Management Team.

Community/Association Responsibilities:

  • Empathetically listen and communicate for understanding.  Build relationships to create small communities.  Provide staff with feedback, coaching, guidance and support.  Build and nurture strategic collaborations within the community.
  • Serve as branch representative to appropriate program clusters as needed. 
  • Serve on appropriate task forces.
  • Attend YMCA training sessions as deemed necessary for professional growth.
  • Serve and is active in community activities to promote programs.
  • Assist Executive Director in volunteer and board recruitment as requested.
Educational Background:

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00
