The Diversity Burn Crew Team Leader directs a 4-person crew with 1 mentor and 3 interns to help build their stewardship and prescribed fire skills.  This person advances conservation programs in the Okefenokee and Osceola Landscape in support of the multi-state Stewardship Training for Environmental Progress (STEP) program as part of a team of GA-TNC staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • The Diversity Burn Crew Team Leader (DBCTL) provides technical support and leadership for the Stewardship Training for Environmental Progress (STEP) program managed by the Longleaf Pine Whole System program. 
  • The DBCTL oversees supervision and management of assistant crew lead and fire crew as part of a collaborative project that recruits underserved young people (aged 18 – 25).  The program trains the young people to be FFT2s, and mentors them with stewardship and live fire experiences in collaboration with the US Forest Service, Student Conservation Association and/or other partners.   The ultimate goal is to build the crews’ stewardship skills to lead to future employment in environmental careers.
  • The DBCTL will also work closely with GA-TNC staff to schedule work with partners primarily on the Osceola National Forest and occasionally elsewhere.  This 16-week burn crew will on a daily basis be used to conduct prescribed burns, burn-related activities and other stewardship activities.  The crew will work in other areas of Georgia and Florida on occasion as determined by GA-TNC staff in collaboration with the DBCTL.
  • The DBCTL will work with the mentor and interns to complete all reporting requirements to assemble metrics and measures of the program.

HOUSING

  • Housing Provided in Lake City or Jacksonville, Florida with basic utilities will be provided at no cost to the employee upon signing and agreeing to lease terms, and the employee must live in provided housing with the burn crew to maximize the effectiveness of the crew and to provide a general security presence for TNC’s equipment.

 
PROJECT DURATION:

  • The position will start no later than January 6, 2020, ending May 29 2020. This position will run for approximately 5 months.​

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • Function as both leader and member of a work team, in a high stress team environment.
  • Coordinate with TNC staff and partners to build schedule for crew
  • Assist in the stewardship and prescribed fire training of program participants.
  • Convey work instructions to Crew members
  • Monitor the progress of Burn Crew Members toward achieving fire management goals including initiation of task book in consultation with the respective state Fire Manager, seeking additional employment opportunities, and seeking additional training.
  • Makes decisions on the fire line based upon evaluation of fire behavior, available resources and judgment.
  • Perform other preserve management duties including, but not limited to, planting native species, marking timber, trail building, and removing/controlling non-native species.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Must be responsible with TNC equipment, time and expense reporting, and assist crew in metric reporting.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers. 
  • Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in training.                  
  • Must have valid driver's license. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and successful completion of FFT1 task book.  Requirements for FFT1 can be found in the Conservancy Fire Management Manual at: http://www.tncfiremanual.org/SquadBoss.htm
  • Experience working with young people.
  • Must achieve physical fitness standards as set by local Fire Manager.
  • 3-4 years training in fire operations or other science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • ENGB / FIRB qualified. 
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.
