The Peninsula Family YMCA is located 20 miles south of San Francisco and is part of the YMCA of San Francisco. The facilities include an aquatics center, wellness facilities, child development center and 10+ other off-site locations providing out-of-school activities.
The Aquatics Director is responsible for leading and developing the Peninsula Family YMCA aquatics programs, and the budget and staff affiliated with those programs. This includes managing, training, maintaining, developing, and evaluating the Group and Private Swim Lessons, swim teams, Lifeguard/Swim Instructor Certification programs and staff. The Aquatics Director is responsible for the operations of the pool, and directly supervises a full-time coordinator, lead staff, swim instructors and swim coaches. S/he must also have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form, with strong human relations skills, and the ability to work effectively with a large and diverse constituency of members, staff, volunteers and peers.
The Aquatics Director is a part of the Management team at the Peninsula branch and must possess a leadership style that is team-oriented. Recognizing that this individual may bring skills in areas other than aquatics, it will be desirable to utilize those skills through sharing of responsibilities with other professional staff. Because of the scope of the responsibilities, this position calls for a person of maturity and good judgment who has developed sound skills in human relations and maintaining the safety/quality of aquatic programs. The Aquatics Director may spend time in a direct service capacity in aquatic programming or leading trainings.
- Directs and supervises all aquatic program activities to meet department and branch objectives, insure quality programming and achieve desired impact.
- Prioritizes being available on deck during all programming areas to provide customer service, relationship-building and support to our members. Applies Listen First / motivational interviewing skills and passes along information and concerns to supervisor. Addresses member concerns and solicits feedback. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
- Intentionally utilizes member engagement strategies to retain members and program participants.
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs aquatics program staff and works in close collaboration with the Aquatics Coordinator and lead staff. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete. Coaches staff and provides regular feedback and mentoring. Conducts staff monthly in-service trainings
- Communicates/meet regularly with Aquatics Coordinator and lead staff to ensure high quality program delivery.
- Supports and collaborates with Aquatics Coordinator and lead staff, ensuring highest levels of swim lesson programming.
- Collaborates with the Director of Health and Wellness to ensure high quality experience in Water Fitness programming.
- Facilitates marketing and distribution of program information to ensure programs meet minimum participant threshold.
- Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
- Evaluates program delivery and membership satisfaction and is responsible for ensuring the highest possible program quality, retention, and relevancy
- Leads Aquatics volunteer fundraising team for Annual Giving Campaign, and supports other volunteer committees as required.
- Active in the YMCA of San Francisco Association assigned team
- Works with branch leadership to exceed standards in all facets of operations including safety audits, financial goals, and staff satisfaction measurements.
- Participates as lesson lead during weekday lessons a minimum of 15 hours per week to ensure quality programming and member relations.
- Responsible for pool operations, in collaboration with the District Facilities Director, complying with all Association standards and safety procedures.
- Ensures a lead staff participates in branch Safety Committee, ensuring regular safety audits and drills occur regularly. Oversees branch AED Coordinator.
- Develops relationships with community leaders with local schools, day care centers, retirement communities, and similar agencies.
- Cooperates with and assists other program leaders in the administration of special activities and events.
- Must be 21 years old or older
- Must be available to work in the facility five days a week and on-call during most operating hours.
- 3-5 years working in Aquatics programming and 1-3 years supervision.
- Must have basic computer program knowledge (Microsoft Office, internet navigation)
- Current Y-approved Lifeguard*, BLS/AED/First Aid/Emergency Oxygen required. LGI, YSLIT, USA Swim Coach preferred.
- Must be willing to work toward Y-USA Team Leader competency level (within 2 years); Coachable Me (with 6 months); Leading & Coaching Others (within 1 year); Supervision 101 (with 3 months) & 201 (with 1 year); Daxko Essentials & Programs (with 3 months); Lawroom Online Trainings; The Y’s Listen First training
Salary: $58,000.00 - $68,000.00
