The San Luis Obispo County Y is poised for growth and is looking to hire a forward thinking person who is enthusiastic and has the skills to be involved in the process!

Under the supervision of the COO and CEO, as directed.  The Director of Membership & Marketing cultivates relationships with members and the community to further the Y’s mission, and increase program participation and member involvement in YMCA activities.  This position follows and promotes the Y’s philosophy in a fast-paced environment, and delivers mission-driven messaging to the community and constituency consistently to strengthen the Y’s position as a leading charitable organization in San Luis Obispo County.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Membership Sales, Retention and Satisfaction

  • Manage and delegate duties to full time front line welcome center staff, shift leaders and a team of part time welcome staff and Kid’s Gym (Child Watch) staff.  Successfully administer and oversee their membership operational duties for a clean database, consistently high sales, new member contact and collections/NFS.
  • Develop retention programs that connect new and existing members to other programs, classes or benefits at the Y with the goal of engagement and increasing cross-program participation.
  • Hire, train and maintain best-in-class front line welcome center staff and hold regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Assist with the implementation of any of the Y’s Health Intervention programs. 
  • Assist in conducting surveys related to developing new improvements and strategies in specific target areas as well as customer satisfaction and knowledge.
  • Report monthly on all membership financials, trend reports and activity including building usage and retention.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and solicitation of corporate memberships to business in the community.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations and YMCA national membership procedures in all areas.
  • Development of the annual budget; is responsible for the management and implementation of the approved budget for membership. Takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Plans and coordinates regular staff meetings for direct reports; Participates in all-staff meetings and/or related meetings.

Marketing and Communications

  • Under the supervision of the CEO and COO, maintain strict adherence to YMCA of the USA guidelines and branding for all internal and external signage and communications.
  • Works with the Y’s contracted design firm to maintain and update web site via a word-based content management system and other online media/marketing vehicles and social media.
  • Produce and/or coordinate the production of the session program guide, internal signage, campaign collateral, posters and promotional materials.
  • Creates the organization’s annual marketing plan.
  • Coordinates projects with Y contractors and internal graphic designers, assign and/or produce and distribute informational updates to members, staff donors, community stakeholders and participants i.e. newsletter, video communication board, signage, E newsletters, photos, videos, etc. as needed and according to the organizational marketing plan.
  • Coordinate YMCA marketing external advertising including press releases, and the like.
  • Act as a media contact for staff regarding photo opportunities, special events and programming, coordinating volunteers as needed.
  • Perform research necessary to develop, plan and implement communications (education and outreach) campaigns to help drive membership and community knowledge of Y programs, services & benefits offered.
  • Work in collaboration with the Development Coordinator and other staff to collect and provide impact stories and measured results for the Annual Support Campaign and other fundraising and impact collateral.
  • Outreach to local companies and organizations to establish alliances.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in sales/marketing and membership/customer service.
  • Possess strong writing and communication skills and be able to formulate impactful stories and publications via social media, print media, signage and mailings.
  • Strong knowledge of social media marketing and website management including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • 1-3 years previous experience supervising staff.  
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community stakeholders
  • Budget development and management knowledge preferred. 
  • Must be able to drive own vehicle, valid insurance/Driver’s License and clear driving record. Remain insurable during employment. 
  • Excellent computer skills; Working knowledge of Daxko preferred.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or In Design and Illustrator a plus.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $45,760.00 - $50,000.00
