The Development Specialist plays an instrumental role in the Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to achieve recruitment and revenue goals for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® (WTEA), an annual signature fundraising and awareness-building event. The Development Specialist works closely with all Special Event Managers to provide exceptional service internally with our staff and volunteers and externally with our walkers, team captains and donors.

The Development Specialist is also responsible for recruiting fundraising teams for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. In this role the Development Specialist will identify leads inside of the business community that may have an interest in learning more about the Alzheimer’s Association and would like to get involved with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. This position will actively contribute to reaching retention, recruitment and fundraising goals. The Development Specialist will build relationships with key company priority contacts and provide exceptional customer service, coaching, motivation, and support in reaching their fundraising goals. This position is based in San Jose.

This is a full-time position, located in San Jose, California and reports to the Director of Walk. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

External Customer Service: Fundraising, Recruitment and Communication (80%)

  • Serve as primary customer service contact for the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Walk
  • Help develop and implement Team Recruitment strategy. Actively research and recruit Teams in coordination with SF & Silicon Valley Event Managers and respective Recruitment Committee
  • Coordinate with  SF & Silicon Valley Event Managers and Committee leadership regarding development and implementation of Walker retention strategy
  • In collaboration with the Walk Leadership Team, develop and run reports in Convio for staff and volunteer use; strategize new reports that can inform our fundraising and cultivation plans
  • Community Engagement-Coordinate and conduct personal meetings with key constituents including prospective corporate and other priority teams
  • Use and promote fundraising best practices with Team Captains to increase fundraising efforts including promotion of online fundraising tools and social media.
  • Respond to all general Walk e-mail inquiries from team captains, participants and donors in a timely manner
  • Serve as backup to Program Assistants with chapter-wide customer service inquiries
  • Provide assistance to team captains and walkers who are registering for the Walk and provide troubleshooting for participants who are using Convio online participant center
  • Develop e-news schedule & content with Special Events Managers. Serve as lead to support field in sending approved Walk Chapter communications as needed
  • Manage and audit Chapter Walk websites to ensure consistency 
  • Support the Special Events Managers & Program Assistants with Convio based e-communications as needed; logistics emails, post-walk thank you emails, challenge week emails, and other coaching emails

Other Walk to End Alzheimer’s Support (20%)

  • Assist Training Team with chapter-wide trainings for Special Events Managers and lead Check-In volunteers
  • Support Chapter-wide all staff Walk participation and technical support related to organizing Chapter staff walk teams 
  • Support check-in area captains at the San Francisco and San Jose Walk to End Alzheimer’s®    
  • Co-lead  with all storage and moving activities and the breakdown of event site in San Francisco and San Jose
  • Maintain up-to-date Board of Directors give-get report
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in developing and executing event strategies
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in fund development or similar field with proven results and track record with positive outcomes in donor cultivation or equivalent
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications and Google Suite
  • Experience with online fundraising software required, such as Team Approach and Convio/Luminate
  • Experience with event marketing and outreach preferred
  • Experience with relationship development preferred
  • Ability to manage large numbers of volunteers at different levels of expertise with diplomacy
  • Ability to work in diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion
  • Ability to travel throughout the Chapter area with some overnight and weekend travel required. This position requires a DMV check. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills; professional customer service skills with visitors, callers and volunteers
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work
