The Strategy Advisor – Coral Reef Restoration will develop new coral restoration concepts across the Caribbean and Hawai‘i business units. They will support new initiatives regarding reef restoration, including insurance solutions. The Strategy Advisor will report to the Executive Director of the Caribbean Division, who is also the Global Lead for Reef Systems within the Global Oceans Program. The Strategy Advisor is a one-year position based in San Francisco.
The Strategy Advisor – Coral Reef Restoration advises business units on active strategy management and capacity building. They possess key topical expertise in reef restoration and insurance.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Designs, implements and directs complex and diverse projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
- Creates competitive strategies and plans locally and organization wide.
- Conducts research and analysis.
- Incorporates cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
- Develops reports, presentations and assessments on topics related to the global strategy.
- Prepares international policy materials, coordinating learning exchanges and conferences.
- May serve as a team leader for assigned projects; may require gaining cooperation of team over whom there is no direct supervisory authority.
- Works within a budget to complete projects, negotiates and contracts with vendors and assists with budget development.
- Requires willingness and ability to travel up to 75% both domestically and internationally, and to work occasional weekends and evenings.
- 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination in a private sector environment, such as management consulting and investment banking. Advanced degree and experience in reef restoration and insurance preferred.
- Experience leading and managing complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment.
- International work experience.
- Project management experience and experience meeting deadlines.
- Experience developing end products with software such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, cloud and web based tools including SharePoint, WebEx/conferencing software, Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, and DropBox or other similar tools.
- Experience presenting to and/or communicating with government or legislative staff, community or business leaders, program leadership and/or similar audiences.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree or PhD in related field.
- Self-starter with ability to generate work plans with limited support in line with the overall Conservation Strategies Team outcomes, goals, strategies, and plans.
- Experience developing business plans or major strategy assessments, particularly with conservation forms of valuation, deal structuring, negotiations support, financial modeling and analysis, business planning.
- Fluency in language other than English (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese).
- Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental and international affairs.
- Willingness to learn and develop expertise in new conservation strategies, economic drivers, management tools, and global affairs.
- Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization, including with senior management, and with Conservancy partners.
