The Project Director of the Global Tuna Program provides strategic, substantive, and operational leadership and supports the Global Tuna Program Director to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the program and the approximately 40 conservation, science and technology staff and contractors that support the program across the planet.
The Global Tuna Program functions across a diverse set of geographies and Conservancy business units spanning the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Project Director is a trusted advisor to the Program Director and coordinates and aligns the work of approximately 40 conservation, science and technology staff and contractors working to advance place-based and policy-based strategies. The Project Director drives the development of annual work plans, addresses human resources and talent development needs, and addresses operational weaknesses to strengthen the overall program. and supports the Program Director in managing fundraising efforts and communications, including managing grant proposal deadlines and communications with important stakeholders internally and externally. The Project Director cultivates collaborative working partnerships with the team and with other staff across the Conservancy to increase the pace, scale and impact of its conservation strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Act independently, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve complex problems.

- Design and manage multiple projects, directing work of staff, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability.
- Design and plan new initiatives, systems or approaches that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved.
- Maintains confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
- Manage team accountability for strategic goals related to functional area.
- Minimize legal risk to the Conservancy and ensure legal compliance with applicable state and local regulation.
- Establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within budget.
- Frequently makes independently strategic decision based on analysis, ambiguous information and judgment.
- 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience developing and administering departmental budget or equivalent.
- Experience managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree in science discipline and/or conservation practice desirable.
- Experience working in the field of conservation outside of the United States.
- Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in conservation, preferably in a non-profit environment.
- Proficient in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data.
- Successful experience managing and implementing strategic program goals.
- Exceptional analytic and creative skills. Ability to synthesize complex information.
- Communicating clearly interculturally and across different work styles via written, spoken, and graphical means.
